I wrote a long reason. But the condense version of why this shouldn’t have been compared to Goblin in terms of people saying we would not like this.
we like Hotel De Luna because of the female lead and episodes are a little more to the point with high level self contained episodes and accomplishments that add to the world building.
Aside from possiblly being soul mates. The Chan sung and Im Wol have jobs and high level tasks to accomplish and its gratifying.
I wrote the following and after wrote the condensed version.
“Please don’t take my feedback as anything negative or rude. I’m just clarifying things to help viewers understand our preferences.
A while back, people suggested we might not enjoy this show as much because we didn’t rate Goblin very highly.
But actually, I do rate it quite high.
I see the Goblin correlation here, where we have an immortal, punished entity waiting for their soulmate, with an older lady/God-like figure guiding or interfering in their path. But for me, this show doesn’t carry some of the cons that Goblin had.
First, it’s shorter in episode length, so the long, drawn-out scenes are reduced. Second, the female leads are entirely different.
In Goblin, I perceived the female lead as a young teenager, and their relationship felt a bit odd to me, even though I didn’t comment much on it after the first episode. In contrast, IU feels like a grown woman in Hotel Del Luna—she looks a mature 27 years old (which is close to what Goblin’s female lead was, but I didn’t perceive her that way).
IU’s character has the personality type I love in female leads: the type we see in shows like Queen Of Tears, It’s Okay to Not Be Okay, Judge vs. Hell, No Pain, No Gain, and Mr. Queen. Whereas I’m not usually a fan of the female lead in Where in the World, although I do like the actress, especially in Moving and Happiness.
Back to Hotel Del Luna: IU’s character isn’t a ‘manchild’—she’s sophisticated, mature, and deadly. Meanwhile, the male lead here does have a bit of a manchild vibe, but his decisions complement IU’s ruthless nature and add depth to the story. They have high-level conversations and don’t let too many plot points drag out without addressing them.
I’m still early in the story, so time will tell, but I’m not getting that frustrating back-and-forth vibe where I’m like, ‘Hurry up and pull the damn sword!’ In this setting, things take time to grow, and you just have to watch it unfold—if you know what I mean without spoiling anything.
So, I feel that you really can’t compare these two shows. They have totally different vibes.
I generally prefer a strong female lead who complements the strengths and weaknesses of the male lead. Rarely is the male lead a major selling point for me in these types of shows. That said, I’ve enjoyed rom-coms like Lovely Runner, What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim, and Love Next Door, where the male lead plays a bigger role in my enjoyment.
To be clear, Goblin was, and still is, iconic. I don’t mind watching it. I just have my preferences and guide people accordingly. Is Goblin a good story? YES. Do I prefer It’s Okay to Not Be Okay? Yes. Is Goblin more popular? Absolutely. And that’s okay!
I only mention Goblin because it’s such an iconic standard. If I say a show is favored more than Goblin, then it’s definitely a must-watch for us. If I rate it lower than Goblin, then I’m really not interested in watching it. If it’s on par with Goblin, it’s worth a watch since I consider Goblin to meet my passing standard. It’s the most iconic show that hits my “just passing” score, if that makes sense.”
