I think the reason we never heard for this growing up was due to it being romance heavy, i think. Its just not something that would be discussed and pushed in our friend circle lol. We danced among a few reasons, but i never heard of the majority of romcome based shows until reacting to them. My homies don't watch them either.

I only found this show because I used to look for a lot of different anime to watch when I was younger. Ppl are more likely to know of Inuyasha then this or Urusai

Yaboyrocklee

Makes sense folks was commenting like there’s no way you grew up watching anime and not knowing this show ha ha ha

Ash

I don't remember Ranma airing in the states...maybe because of the female nudity? I do remember being able to buy the dvd from some stores or online though. I didn't catch the Ryoga foreshadowing on the first watch but got it this time with the remake. 12 year old me wasn't worried about foreshadowing lol.

Dragons like Bananas

7:53 I think they considered it his fault, because he hit the bandana which made it go twords her/cut her hair. I would still say the other guy is to blame tho

John Ng

Funny that both of you mentioned Inuyasha. Because it’s by the same mangaka who drew Ranma1/2 😄

Dragons like Bananas

23:00 Ranma lucky he hit him with the water , a few seconds later and ...

Dragons like Bananas

I would have turned the pig back and let Akane wake up and beat him instead

it really hits a good balance of feels and ridiculous shenanigans. inuyasha, which is the same author, got more play on tv so more people knew about it overseas, and although its technically a shonen also had some romance and a lot of female fans. but bruh short blue haired younger sister and long brunette older sister, im getting trauma flashbacks 👀

At 14:49 there's a very subtle reference as Ryoga is walking on the beach as to just how very lost he managed to get. In the foreground, those are hibiscus flowers. In the background, that's Diamond Head. He's walking on Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, thousands of miles from Japan. That's pretty damn lost.

It's super possible to have missed this anime, don't know what those folks are talking about. I read the manga since I knew the mangaka is the same for Inu Yasha and I wanted to read some of her previous works. The original anime itself is pretty old (started in like 89) and I watched thru a chunk of it on Hulu like maybe 5 years ago. Otherwise, I don't think this was airing anywhere in the US during the 90s or early 2000s.

chaosdreamer

Yup. Ranma 1/2 did not air in the US (except possibly some random local PBS stations that had Japanese programming). The VHS fansubs were fairly widespread, including lots of scumbags selling copies at local conventions in the early 90s 😒. All of the shows that Lee and Director mentioned in the intro aired on Cartoon Network's Toonami and was part of the rise of anime being introduced to "kids with cable" in the late-90s/2000s.

chaosdreamer

Probably depends on whether these folks grew up in the US and, if they did, if they're older than you and/or was exposed to anime beyond just what was shown on TV. ETA: Ranma 1/2 had one of the first really decent English language dubs and as anime grew more popular, video rental places started to stock dubs, which made it a lot more accessible.

Yiff Zombie

Ranma 1/2 was kind of the cut-off point between normal folks and otaku back in the mid 90s in the US. It didn't come out on American TV/Cable, so you had to buy or rent VHS tapes of it. Outside of knowing someone that had seen it, or seeing the tapes in in a Suncoast or a mom-and-pop video rental place, the only place you'd really get exposed to Ranma would be in Animerica or on anime message boards on the internet, and if you were reading anime magazines or posting on anime forums on the internet, you were pretty far from the mainstream.

My man Lee seen so much Inukai's dog slurp up bodily fluids that the pig + female Ranma bath scene was like watching vanilla hentai fr Didn't even bat an eyelid

Stazzi

As a suburban white/latino, I’ve casually watched anime since I was young, starting with Pokemon and into Dragon Ball, DBZ, Naruto, Bleach etc. I also had never heard of Ranma until you started reacting to it.

onew's falsetto

ranma was one of my first anime series, along with inuyasha, dbz, and sailor moon... but i was born in 78 so that was of the time.

Thamor

ISn't Ryoga = Vegeta VA? :D

Thamor

Inuyasha was what truly got me hooked. And I think year was about 2000

Yaboyrocklee

I’m embarrassed to say I only recognize Vegeta in dub. Lol. Aside from super most of my Dragon Ball Z has been in English audio haha

Thamor

Don't worry DB in dub is rare dubs I have enjoyed too, but seen DBZ in both dub & original voices. Didn't you guys react in normal japanese the last DB story?

Dirty_Oldman

The man reason I know Ranma is from being in Borders (my home away from home, R.I.P.) reading mana. I would see it and never picked it up. Then later I became familiar with the anime.

Kraivathin Kritaramrueng

If both of you guys really enjoying it, then I'm happy. Beside, you're not suppose to watch it in "I'm watching DB"'s age. For now, waiting for a certain character to show up, that's all. My first love XD.

Ash0812

I remember watching the whoie series on AXN cable channel, along with other great anime classics, like You're Under Arrest, Vandread, Gatekeepers, Fushigi Yuugi, Shadow Skill, El Hazard, Boys Be and so many, many more ^_^ I miss those great simple times Although I think there's no AXN in America? Not sure. They used to show tons of anime almost the whole day every day back then

Ash0812

I guess Ranma is more known in the East/Asia than in the West, especially during the height of fansubbed VHS copies and cable TV back then, especially thanks to AXN channel, and more than InuYasha since Ranma was everywhere and a well-known romcom back in those days, so I guess that's where the people asking Lee about it were coming from.
