hot take: as it stands, in the book of Roshi she has no valid reason to be upset other than the classroom incident lol

Oikura: "You took everything from me!" Araragi: "I don't even know who you are."

Greg Harrison

Their relationship and past are messy as hell, but that makes it interesting to me. Also nice, extended discussions are fun. I think I may lean toward Sheera's view, she was a desperate kid and Araragi failed her (in her eyes) twice.

2023-10-07 08:02:42 I don't think its that hot of a take Roshi but I'm with Sheera, you can't really put it on Ragi for failing to notice signs of domestic violence when he's a dumb kid in like 6th grade nor can you put it on Sodachi for being afraid to speak up imo. + From her perspective Araragi failed her twice, 1 with the home situation and 2 by getting swept up in the moment and throwing her under the bus.

Man that was a fun after reaction discussion lmao. I'm with sheera tho, both are at faults. It's like they both rolled critical miss in every turn and it all leads to the worst outcome possible. But seriously, I could never get this type and level of writing in any manga or anime nowadays... it's so character oriented of a story. It's not based of a major plot, but more of the characters flaws and strenghts.

I would say after she stabbed him with a pencil, she had a look of concern and/or regret. She doesn't want to hurt him, it's like he's precious to her. But she hates him as well.

GrImProphecy

I really appreciate when you guys disagree, much respect that you can have two viewpoints and both have good reasons!

YEs

Are you guys going to watch undead unluck?

Going into this completely would be a little spoilery, but Araragi's memory is not bad. He has a tendency to actively ignore things that are uncomfortable to and would threaten his sense of justice/personal identity if he thought about them too much. Ougi mentioned that he's not misremembering and that he accurately remembers the details. In episode 2 he mentions it too: He says he never forgot, he was just looking away. This is also touched on in this episode: it was because of his happy environment and "just" outlook that he couldn't perceive or imagine what Oikura's unhappy life was really like. Same thing happened with Sengoku. ("Were this a rom-com manga, the love interest would turn out to be none other than me ... While I said I was jealous, I had a girlfriend, so of course, if Sengoku really did have feelings for me, it would just be a headache." Bakemonogatari 2 305-306). Araragi is not dense; he is just a lot smarter than he lets on.

by chances

Sheera, Araragi did not vote for her in the class trial tho.

Ice

I don't think it's really spoilery but rather subtext. It's not like there's some grand reveal on why his memory is "bad". It's just implied. Btw nisio loves to make his characters have essentially bad memory but with interesting reasons behind that bad memory, like Ii's memory being bad because of how detached he is from the world (Zaregoto), Nadeko's memory being bad because she literally made her whole story up(Monogatari) and Shichika's memory being bad because he sees himself as a weapon with no use for normal human qualities (Katanagatari).

Ice

I don't think Araragi is in the wrong, nor do I think Sodachi is in the wrong. They're both kids. Oikura is in an abusive household. She doesn't really have much choice except if she goes to the police station herself and has enough courage to report her own parents.

Ice

PLEASE have more of these kinds of discussions. They're really fun to listen to. I understand you guys might not have enough time to do stuff like this each week (especially with how busy the schedule is rn), but I genuinely think the reactions are at least 2x more fun when you guys discuss what happened afterward. It's one of the reasons I loved the Oregairu reactions. You can even criticize the series for all I care.

Ougi

Yeah I love their discussions too, it's so nice to see them rlly diving into the ep and see what they take from it and then how that carries into the reactions going forward

nemui

I like this kind of discussion

Sodachi is such a tragic character. I always feel so incredibly bad for her.

FjordPhd

What I meant by spoilery is that the other stuff that further corroborates this happens in future episodes, hence I avoided going into it "completely". And yes, a lot of it is subtext, but a lot is also spelled out directly, as in my examples.

Laandri

great reactions guys, love you both!

Donovan Doyle

I'm just here for the ride as I've realized they don't really understand the characters very much this episode isint a good example as they were spot on but bake started over 2 years ago with their reacts and with all the stuff they see all the nuance with the characters kinda leaves especially when they take months of breaks between seasons. Great and fun reaction all things considered

2023-10-09 03:46:45 I personally like the reactions. Monogatari is a pretty different experience, relative to some of the other shows they react to, so it is fun to watch their take on things.

2023-10-09 10:07:06 Yeah it's really unfortunate. It's not even that us monogatari fans are impatient and want reactions to come out more often. It's just that when they take 6 month breaks for 4 episode arcs, you're bound to ruin the series for yourself. Kinda ironic considering this arc is all about Araragi not remembering stuff.

I love ougi so much

I love this reaction so much. That was a very fun conversation at the end.
