Theo Vorster

Those with an eye for detail may have noticed that when the bald Liviumen member tells the protestors that their leader Mizuhashi had died, the exact scene before that has their leader bedridden shows Mizuhashi’s mouth still clearly moving/breathing. There is some cut dialogue from the manga, specifically when the Liviumen are laying siege to the Immortal Order, where an Immortal Order member (one of the guys with a mustache) try to tell the invading Liviumen that Mizuhashi’s leg had been necrotic when she was originally admitted to the Immortal Order, and that if her leg hadn’t been amputated, she would have been at serious risk of dying. And it was more clear in the manga, but Hoshio (the woman on life-support), was the only person in the Immortal Order who had been afflicted with the same disease that Tarao and Mikura (the woman that Maru had been traveling with and Kiruko got the laser-gun from) died from. All the other patients were just people suffering from regular injuries and other maladies that Dr. Usami had treated over the years. Also those who have watched this series’ ED enough times may have noticed that this episode contained a neat visual parallel/reference to one of the visuals located near the end of the ED. And if it wasn’t obvious by the end of the episode, yes the insignia on the button Dr. Usami was holding before he killed himself, is indeed the same design as the one on Kiruko’s Kiru-Beam/laser-gun. For those interested in reading along with the manga, Episode 8 adapted the remainder of chapter 20 (19/32 pages), all of chapter 21, the first 7 pages of chapter 22 and then 5 pages from a different middle part of chapter 22 (so 12/24 pages), and then finally the first 6 pages of chapter 23 (6/30 pages). Total, this is equivalent to about 2.3 chapters worth of manga. According to Masakazu Ishiguro on Twitter, the remaining parts of chapter 22 had to be cut completely from the anime for like run-time related reasons (i.e. apparently they won't be included at the beginning of episode 9). And if anyone is interested in starting the manga after this season is finished (it is currently planned to adapt up to some part of tankōbon Volume 6 of the manga, likely somewhere in the range of chapters 34-37), I personally would still recommend starting the manga from the beginning regardless, as in addition to the standard cutting of extra dialogue and scenes from the anime for run-time and cinematic pacing, the chapter titles and cover pages of the manga also play a role in experiencing the foreshadowing of the story that the anime can’t quite replicate (due to the inherent difference in mediums). The mangaka of Heavenly Delusion, Masakazu Ishiguro (who is active on Twitter), their most well known previous work is “And Yet the Town Moves” (also known as Soremachi), which was serialized from 2005-2016. They have also done a number of other single volume manga and short stories collections. Ishiguro's has also stated that the major influences for the Heavenly Delusion series, include the works Akira, Armored Trooper Votoms, and an old Japanese science-fiction novel titled "Dogra Magra" that was written Kyūsaku Yumeno (who appears as a character in Bungo Stray Dogs) and published in 1935.

Bosastar

So much pain this week😭😂

Team Skull Grunt B

If i'm understanding correctly, the girl at the end was the dying girl in that past? And the doctor was the kid who got her nudes (since they both have white hair). It's interesting because if that is the case, she did mention him "locking her in a room and cutting her up" in their first interaction. This show is pretty confusing lol

Angelo

Yeah yall picked the wrong day to watch this shit all back to back, This entire week was sad vibes wtih oshi no ko. to be fair i watched hell's paradise and heavenly delusion back to back to beacuse well same day release You know the emotional damage is real when everyone quiet damm lol.

Angelo

Oh yeah she did mention that locking in the room and cutting up part. Mimihime also mentions in episdoe 1 that she dreams about 2 people coming to take her outside one with tokio's face well maru looks like tokio and her last request was to see the sky so they did take her outside.

Team Skull Grunt B

That would make sense, although it's kinda strange to me that neither of them noticed maru's face? I assume either they just couldn't be bothered to notice or they forgot what tokio looked like

VictorBR45

Shiro and Usami have the same VA

Lash

im pretty sure Mimihime(the girl at the end of the episode) is the same girl who just died, and Dr Usami is most likely Shiro(the kid who got sent the nude). in one of the early episodes it was Mimihime who said to Tokio that she had a dream that someone who looked like her(Tokio) came to take her outside. and if that the case then Tokio is probably Marus mom which would explain why the look alike and why he has powers. the only question would be why is Mimihime having dreams about the future.

Theo Vorster

There's a cut scene and line from manga where after Kiruko asks Dr. Usami about the Doctor who performed the brain transplant (Usami says he doesn't believe he's ever met that Doctor before), Usami then states that he has a hard time remembering people's faces. Also during this episode Hoshio does gaze at Maru pretty intently a couple of times, so maybe she did notice his looks but was too tired and ready to die to want to have a long conversation through her tablet.

Max Stone

also, the end scene with the cave is supposed to be Mimihime before she goes to heaven and supposedly Shiro (Usami) coming to meet her (her saying, "oh you came, it's not so scary anymore") before they both "go into the light"

Exit

I cried when I watched this episode for the first time, then I cried again after watching you guys react to it 😂😭

Theo Vorster

It's likely that Mimihime's special unique power is some sort of vague precognition or ESP in general (like how many of the other kids have unique and special abilities. Like Shiro's ability is hinted at being intelligent and having a great affinity with technology and machines. While Taka's is his extreme athleticism and durability. Kona seemingly also has his own form of ESP related to his drawings. Kuku basically has frog-like wall climbing abilities, and Tarao apparently had super-strength. And then the kid Asura (who committed suicide and looked like a stereotypical alien) apparently even had a mind so powerful their body couldn't handle it (hence why they had an abnormally large cranium).

Julius Emmanuel

So much pain all in one day 😭😭😭

Skebaba

Yeah. And it's not the DISEASE that kills random niggas making them Man-Eaters. You have to be some type of Man-eater hybrid (i.e that red core thingie) AND get the disease for it to happen, neither works solo, you need both to meet the criteria for the tansition

Grant Beaudette

It's crazy that it's takes watching like half a dozen people react to this show for me to piece together what's actually going on.

Skebaba

Yes. Nah she said to him "stabbing me with needles & cutting me up?" when asking for more details on when he was trying to explain "nigga I'm horni" cuz he doesn't understand it himself either cuz no sex-ed at the school etc. The "locking her in a room" was how he tried to explain the feeling to her when she first asked, before the additional query about being more specific @Max Stone Yeah it's the stereotypical anime trope about dying or w/e, where couples get to go to pepsiland at the same time even if there's time between their deaths in reality

Kingmakaii

Damn this episode actually hit it’s taken everything in me not to cry 😭

Theo Vorster

Yes but that bit hasn't been explicitly revealed yet in the anime, so I am deliberately withholding certain information in my comments.

DatKid_Kaneki

holy pain??? like what the hell going on

Alexander Joseph Cruz

Of all the sad scenes of the last week, I say this one is my choice for best director and direction. Vinland Saga and Hell's Paradise both killed characters that were given time to get fleshed out and allow us to have a connection with them. That makes those deaths more impactful. Heavenly Delusion achieved the same impact with 2 characters we just got introduced to in the same episode(wink). This was a tough week with these 3 shows along with Oshi No Ko.

KeYo

sadness -turns on neyo songs-

Dontsop Keran

I mean hells paradise really only gave an episode to flesh out their character tbh

13

I think there's a misunderstanding about all the people with prosthetics. I didnt take it to mean they were all infected, rather they're just missing limbs because of post-apocalypse living situation injuries. When rumor spread that Usami could fix them, they all came for help, and Usami made prosthetics for everyone because he knows the girl with disease enjoyed watching him create things

DJ Muldrow

I feel like the girl at the end is the girl Dr.Usami was taking care of because it was kinda hinting when she was in the darkness but someone came there with her that comforted her. Also him having the pendant and the patient having the sickness that we’ve ONLY seen on people like Maru and the kids in the facility further proves my point.

DJ Muldrow

We don’t get to see her natural eye color because she has the doctors eye but I’m sure that’s on purpose so we never know who she really is.

HIM

Great reaction! Thanks for the tears 😢 👍 But yo, tell me why I thought that was Tokio the whole episode until they revealed it was actually Mimihime that just got off'd 😅. I don't know if everyone will catch that on first watch, but this is S tier mystery writing right here. God bless this anime 🙌 lol

Jake Thompson

I got a CRAZY theory goin on but I need like ONE puzzle piece to show up otherwise the whole thing falls apart. I dunno if this is my fave show of the year but it's the one I think about the most in between episodes.

Merfhew

Wait, is this something that anime-only viewers were supposed to figure out on their own, or would it have been revealed later in the story? I'd like to think I'm fairly good at reading between the lines, but this went over my head. I kinda wish I hadn't read the comments now, if I'm being completely honest, but it's my own fault for looking.

iChris

I mean it’s no longer a theory. The last scene with her in the dark feeling alone confirms that the girl who died was Mimihime. Then she’s later accompanied by Dr. Usami after he kills himself who we still don’t know who he is but might be Shiro since we were shown that he has feelings for her.

Merfhew

Come on, Skebaba... let's not spoil people who haven't read the manga.

Merfhew

I mean, it was definitely still a theory, at least in the sense that the anime was being vague about it. While I understand how exciting it is to figure something out before it's been officially revealed (assuming you're anime-only), I wish folks wouldn't just assume that everyone came to the same conclusion.

Drake Chuckle

Got me twice, I knew it was coming and it nuked me again. Damn.

Andy Jarquin

Does anyone know the name of the sad piano song that played during the scene with the doctor reading the thank you messages?

Theo Vorster

A few anime-onlys (or manga readers when they read the series for first time) were able to realize this on their own at this point in the story, but the majority of manga readers didn’t figure it out until at least the equivalent of a couple more episodes of the anime (if not until where the equivalent of the anime will likely adapt up to for the season 1 finale). The anime also made this foreshadowing a little more explicit than the manga (partially due to voice actor’s character credits being a thing people can look up).

Merfhew

Bummer. I would have preferred to wait until the actual reveal. I guess that's the risk you take by reading comments.

Theo Vorster

It’s a track that Kensuke Ushio composed, but I don’t think an OST with track titles has been officially released yet. Kinda reminded me a bit of some of Ushio’s tracks from Devilman Crybaby.

Team Skull Grunt B

I mean, i'm not a manga reader. It was just super suspicious to me that they randomly showed mimihime after an entire episode focused on some random character. Plus when they showed them together in the medical room i felt like they were lowkey hiding her face on purpose. And after looking up the kid (shiro) just seeing his hair was also white basically led me to believe this to be the case

danial javady

This one was really hard to watch. If you can relate to the experience of seeing someone you love being hospitalized, and gravely ill, you'll know how grief is the worst kind of misery to experience. Don't take the people you love for granted.

Theo Vorster

To be clear, it’s never explicitly “revealed” in like a Star Wars “I am your father” way, it’s more that after a certain point in the narrative, enough information has been given to the audience that the story expects its readers to have come to that realization (when and where that happens in this series is liable to vary for different people, hence why there is a small percentage of people that did legitimately come to that realization this early on).

Garlic

So I definitely didn't reach that same conclusion but wow that actually blew my mind. that makes episode 1 make so much more sense and makes it a lot sadder too.

Merfhew

@Team Skull Grunt - Honestly, my first thought was that the post-credits scene was merely a lead up to whatever happens next week. We've been with Maru for two episodes now, so it seemed like we might visit Tokio for an episode or two. My second thought was a dumb theory based on the fact that Mimihime looks younger in the "dream" she was having. You did a good job putting the puzzle pieces together. I only wish I'd done the same or stayed ignorant, but that's on me for reading the comments. The timeline mystery appears to be solved now though, so that's the real bummer for me (as I was hoping for a dramatic reveal in the final episode or something). Based on Theo's comments though, it sounds like I shouldn't expect hand holding in this series. Which is totally fine. Showing is, in most cases, better than telling. I'm glad to hear you're anime-only. It's a pet peeve of mine when someone spoils. You theorized, which is entirely different.

Team Skull Grunt B

Yeah that's completely fair, for me the moment mimihime appeared i immediately went "ain't no way that girl was her bro are you fr 💀" so i was kinda surprised that roshi, sheera, and lupa didn't arrive to a similar conclusion. only thing that's weird asf to me is why is she even having dreams like that?

RuTo-San

idk if this anime will get there but this show gets super dark probably in season 2 if this gets renewed will see

Bradley Canning

Bro reading that shit was hard enough man, despite the pain its a great episode and i loved it

SixPathTobi

THAT chapter will probably cause ppl to drop the show considering most dropped the manga after

azerangga

Ed song hits different

Miguel NoName

I was getting big Akira vibes from the girl on the bed for some reason. Maybe the experiments they were running on Akira during the movie? Idk, it had a similar vibe to it.

Theo Vorster

No surprise there, as Masakazu Ishiguro (the mangaka of the series) has stated multiple times that Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira is one the biggest influences on him (for this series and in general). So much so, that Ishiguro sometimes feels he needs to deliberately be conscious of not drawing upon Akira too much when writing/drawing Heavenly Delusion (and other manga, particularly science fiction I assume).

Theo Vorster

Remember the kids in the facility/school have been shown to have unique abilities/superpowers. Mimihime’s is likely some sort of precognition and/or ESP.

Theo Vorster

No, it is all but confirmed that the anime will adapt up to “those” chapters. The mangaka, Ishiguro, has stated that the first season of the anime will adapt up to some part of tankōbon volume 6 (which collects said chapters). The likely ending range of the season will be around chapters 34-37, so the heavy stuff will most likely be in episode 12 and parts of episode 13. Also while some may have dropped the series, most people definitely have not dropped the manga since those chapters.

[red]

This studio knew what they were doing with this series. Damn.

Cameron Robinson

Maru’s former care taker also had that disease. She was probably connected to the facility

Guns

Not sheera making up scenarios in her head 😂. The guy that got his throat cut was the mole in the order, he was just trying to tell them where to go after saying while smiling “this is my time” as in to reveal himself as the mole. But he just got killed instead cus noone but probably the leader knew

Theo Vorster

I think the bald guy was aware that the guy was their mole, but just wanted to silence any potential loose ends either way.

solaa

I'm almost certain Usami is Shiro, remember that Shiro likes to build machines, just like Usami.

Devin B

I'm mad this show made me suspect that the doctor was a bad guy last episode. Dude was nothing but wholesome, especially giving up his eye so that she can be a little bit more human.

nemui

It always teared me up with this kind of scene that we also saw in the last of us but at the same time, it also make me furious to see that people take those decisions.

Masneomlock

I don’t think he did. In both the manga and the anime it’s essentially a result of them being so pumped up that they forgot they had a guy on the inside, resulting in them killing whoever they came across.

Ross

Can confirm that during those chapter releases, >most< posts on reddit were about people dropping the manga.

Arc

I think Robin is actually the Doctor. He switched into a younger body. Just a guess tho

Samuel Cuello

amazing reveal at the end with usami and the girl being mimihime and shiro! This confirms Marus timeline is in the present as opposed to mimihime and the lab kids being from the past maybe 20 ish years back assuming they age naturally. Sad how they went out, but now we know they're out from the facility, meaning they either escaped or there is no facility anymore.

Jr

makes sense that shit was so pointless and random in an otherwise well written story

Spriggz

Did the cult leader lady actually die from that fall? Did they kill her to take over? Or is she just hiding in the shadows forever now? That left me a bit curious.

Spriggz

I'm definitely thinking Robin has been killed and the doctor took over his body. Like c'mon, all of a sudden Robin became an enthusiastic doctor? But yea, great reaction

Spriggz

Also I'm guessing the dream thing was probably Asura, just so they don't drop that plotline

Theo Vorster

I am sure there was a vocal and visible minority voicing said sentiments. But if an actual majority of readers (paying readers) had dropped it, it likely still wouldn’t be published in its magazine (i.e. would have been prematurely canceled).

Matrim Hall

I think the prosthetics he made were just for missing limbs, apart from the girl he was caring for. The whole purpose of the place was for taking care of her and he didn't give anyone else that kind of attention.

Theo Vorster

I don’t think the bald guy was that absent-minded, considering the bald guy was one of the people manipulating and instigating the mob, I am pretty sure his actions were far more calculated.

Ledish

The manga is slightly different, since we get a bit more internal monologue... though the killing is done just the same way. I think the biggest difference between the anime and manga in the assault plot is that the manga makes it more clear that some of their followers are hesitating. For example, one of the other guys stops and is like "Huh, wasn't this guy our spy..?" before deciding to just ignore it (probably for self-preservation) and go with the flow.

NJ

Man, I think this is my personal anime of the season. At least discounting Vinland Saga since it's technically just continuing from a different season. The character animation in this show has been stellar. You usually only see this level of character acting in anime films. And I'll never not gush over it when I see it. 11/10 episode.

ChickenDinners

Yeah I think she was the only one with the disease. The other people were just patients missing limbs who desired prosthetics.

Jay_aka_Jordan

I have a good feeling mimihime dreamt her own death and doesn’t remember because you aren’t supposed to know how you die Her being alone in a dark she was alone then when Dr. Usami who I think is bowl cut boy shot himself he joined her in the dark cave but his presence brought light and happiness to her and now they are together That’s my thought from how the moments kinda paralleled it each other

kristian

How is that a reveal u mean u just dropped a spoiler. Just confirmed sumn that clearly ain’t confirmed😂

kristian

That’s what I’m saying bro said that confirms it as if it’s so clear. No U just confirmed it. Shit is wack

iChris

My apologies for being more intellectually capable than you and being able to notice the obvious. Also yes, I am anime only.

Nobody

Fuck man. Just hearing the word .hack brought so many memories back. I knew yall were real ones.

Jonathan Reyes

Whats up with all the new episodes series with sad scenes? 😩 vin, hells, this one, only deaths ☹️ they hit us hard

Sauce Sorcerer

MOST people definitely did not drop this manga. SOME were disturbed enough for sure, but saying most people dropped it is inaccurate.

Merfhew

Edit: Egg on face. Note to self... next time, think long and hard before playing the passive aggressive card. @iChris --- Did I perhaps strike a nerve? That wasn't my intention. I merely wished to offer up a small correction. If I offended your superior intellectual capabilities, you have my sincerest apologies.

iChris

Naah bro my reply wasn’t towards you, it was towards kristian

Merfhew

Oh God, now I feel like a real ass. I'm sorry for jumping to conclusions.

BornUnMotivated

I think yall forgot that dude they first killed who was "gonna say something" was on there side and let our main duo into the garage in the first place. Also I think he just cut the limbs off cause it's all he knew what to do most of those people probably don't have that disease cause cutting out only prolongs your life but it comes back but all those people are only missing one limb.

BornUnMotivated

Also dude who was first killed in this episode was on their side he let the main duo in the garage originally

twis tempo

I’m pretty sure dude in the eye patch is ol horny boi from the school that’s why they showed that at the end

Ebankz

Like I'm so confused how anything was confirmed by that random ass scene.

Ahmed14

didn't know kaguya sama's narrator this evil
