Ty for another great series react.

Christina

Why can't we have nice things?

Ayjayy

This show is so elite. It is so unique too, I have never seen an anime tackle with the same issues and showing graphic detail, but do it in such a mature and tasteful way. The fact that the manga was written in the 80s even further makes this so unique. I have mixed feelings about the ending (I cried so hard lol), of course I wanted Ash and Eiji to be happy together in Japan, but that is naïve and Ash's problems would follow him everywhere he goes in the world and would further endanger Eiji (which is why he chooses to die in the library, wondering in another life about him and Eiji). There is a manga oneshot that does a timeskip, Eiji is still in love with Ash and cries when looking at pictures of him (Eiji becomes a professional photographer and has one of Ash's pictures displayed at his exhibit, titled 'Dawn' which is the meaning of Aslan) so it is even more depressing than this ending.

Cheesecake

I once threw a banana at a fish well worth my time and effort

Seraph_Dalgon_

I recommend either Kekkai Sensen or Durarara for a trio reaction and The Ancient Magus Bride for a duo reaction since Season 2 is coming next year

EmoBurrito

I remember this show being better when i was younger lol. But it was alright

Nicole Guerrero

“My soul is always with you”, dang this anime brought me nothing but depression 😪😭

jordanxinah

I remember banana fish ending messed me up for a couple days. 😭 it’s such a beautiful anime

Mob K.O.

WARRIOR ON HBO MAX

Mozart Waddell

It's so sad that Ash and Eiji never touched back at the hospital. The knife didn't even reach his vitals. Ash chose to die at peace from blood loss in the library.

Grelk

What is next 🤔

LelaniG

It hit me even harder knowing Ash chose to die so Eiji could live in peace, the after-story pulls at the heart strings

This show made me so emotional and depressed

Mozart Waddell

Yut Lung of all people gets a happy ending 🙃

Devin B

He definitely knew that trouble was gonna follow him wherever he went so he decided to give Eiji the chance to keep living his peaceful life by not being around him permanently.

Mari

Y’all need to react to Goblin Slayer before season 2 release’s 🔥🔥

Mozart Waddell

Same. The finale caused me to experience a lot of depressive episodes. I can't even watch their reaction of the finale because I don't want to experience that all over again. I'm just commenting and moving along.

Luft

Now that it’s over the author published extras called Max Lobo’s notes where Max writes about what’s going on and all in the future “to Ash”. Here’s the English translation https://www.tumblr.com/http-eiji/187485458039

Devin B

I was depressed for a while after this last episode cause they both just wanted to be around each other but couldn't due to circumstances. They both saw something in each other that they were missing and only brought the best out of one another. To me their relationship was more about companionship than love cause just being around each other was all they needed.

Mozart Waddell

God that's heartbreaking. I was lightly spoiled by a CBR article that the anime didn't have a happy ending. I thought Eiji would be the one to die and somehow Ash could escape his fate. I hope on their own time they read the conclusion in the manga.

Randomuser 5989

You should react to titans next

Devin B

That's my only gripe about the ending. Yut-Lung of all people gets a happy ending after being a jealous bitch for the majority of the show but Ash had to go through hell trying to take down Banana Fish and ended up dead.

Tahti

I hope ya'll check out Fruits Basket or Kemono Jihen soon!

L Jeans

I kinda think thats the point. That Ash is killed by some random thug, like everyone thought he would be. All the things Ash accomplished here and to the world he would just be another statistic. Goes to show how we view people may be different than life really turns out, and how Yut-lung of all people gets a second chance but Ash is delt circumstances and accepts his fate.

AdventHorizons

It’s been an absolute journey with you three here on this show I remember watching this so long ago and forgot quite a bit about it, so it’s been fantastic to relive this show again with you guys thanks and keep up the fantastic work!

ComeTseMe

Damn Roshi gave it a 7 even though the ending was fantastic😂. At least give it an 8, hell an 8.5 for an anime that covers assault similar to like Law & Order SVU which doesn’t happen often in anime with great writing, showing how they deal with trauma and violence. It’s one my favorites from Studio MAPPA that is not on people radar given the subject matter. I can understand not giving it a 9 & above for the pacing due to episode 21, as I agree that it was rushed and could’ve stretched it to make it reach the 26 episode mark, instead of 24 episodes, but it could’ve been due to production issues, that I couldn’t be that long.

Mr. K

Eminence, cmon Eminence of Shadow lmaooo

Nicole Guerrero

I want to eat your pancreas is the name of the movie where the girl gets stabbed too 😭

WeavyBoo

People like different things than you bro. That's all there is to it. I'm happy you really enjoyed this series tho, because it really wasn't my thing

Mozart Waddell

@L Jeans That's a take I've never come across before. I like it. That really bought things into perspective. The opinions I have on Yut-Lung won't change but my outlook on the decision to keep him alive certainly has.

ComeTseMe

Oh I agree that people like different things. Just was surprised at his rating at the end. But yeah this is my 2nd run with, as I watched it when it first aired on Amazon Prime, so I was excited AF to see them reacting to it and getting to re-experience the show all over again. As I’ve been recommending it to many in my circle that are looking for something different to watch.

ComeTseMe

I really want them to do Kemono Jihen too! That was under the radar! Or SK8 the Infinity Or the animated series, Pantheon from AMC+

Devin B

@L Jeans yeah as much as I wanted Ash to be happy life isn't that forgiving. There are times that the good gets dealt a bad hand and the bad gets away with whatever atrocities they commit. This anime just reinforced that way of thinking by showing us Ash's journey and how it ended.

Apex Astro

Shin Sekai Yori would be a a good show to react to.

Deshawn Smith

Roshi, youre thinking of "I Want To Eat Your Pancreas"

wen

i really love this ending because it shows the deep bond between ash and eiji, but also how eiji has always been ash's strength AND weakness; eiji brought out the best in ash and taught him true acceptance, but it was ash's love for others that always got him in dangerous situations. i think what people hate most about the ending is that ash could've survived if he went to a hospital since the injury was non-fatal, but from ash's perspective, he's not someone who's able to think rationally. he was tired and would rather die peacefully with eiji's letter (which is why i think understanding ash's character comes before understanding the ending). thanks for the reactions 🥲 such a good anime

Shawn Oxley

Man I loved the ending to this its so bitter sweet but damn I wish things could've worked out also I'm not one to ship normally but I wish the author didn't shut it down and say there was nothing romantic

Shawn Oxley

the show is great if i was to guess what lowered roshis rating it would be the goofy ass plot armour where a wounded teen can literally dodge a machine gun and how everyone but ash has star wars aim

Shawn Oxley

Also I don't think the existence of banana fish was leaked to the public because all info about it was in the briefcase that burnt what did leak to the public was the pictures of ash being bought and raped by government officials

RuTo-San

Eiji threw the whole show“I’m not fucking leaving!”-Wolf of Wall Street

I always meant to watch this show but you guys reacting got me to watch it with you finally and while I loved some things about the show, personally this ending is very disappointing. I can understand why people like it, there can be a sense of completion about it of course, but there's just something unnecessarily depressing about seeing a character go through all this shit in life just to get killed in the last few minutes lmao. Like... just purposefully melancholic more than anything else and kind of devoid of meaning other than "how can we make this tragic." If it was a karma thing with the cycle of violence, then Yut-Lung and Blanca's endings don't make sense with it. It just ends up feeling lame since the bit of the story with Lao didn't even feel unfinished to warrant it lmao. It was just shock more than anything which unfortunately is a common factor among some of the show's most notable low points. If it had to happen, I wouldn't even have minded if Eiji had actually been axed, or if they just never met again. But there's just something especially frustrating about killing a character you've made a victim the entire series, not to mention the whole bury your gays trope that I was expecting regardless (which just made me doubly tired of this kind of ending). Anyway, I'm glad I watched this when you guys did so that you guys could keep it less depressing in the end. And I'm glad you guys found it was a good ending that left you feeling satisfied overall with the series. It was fun getting your reactions!

Friendly Elites

Max burned the photos of Ash to let him have some peace, they used the photos of the all the other boys in the same situation to tie the noose on the foundation.

Gunny

Unrelated but r.i.p Kevin Conroy Batman’s greatest voice

Friendly Elites

I definitely felt the middle of the show felt very weirdly paced and the tone of it was going all over the place. I lost interest and never ended up finishing this anime when it was airing but the ending really redeemed this. The story of the leopard and how Ash always considered that he would die just like it, climbing too high and dying to reach something nobody knows about... Only for his own end to be framed the exact same way, but instead we know Ash decided to die of his own wounds in the one place he was always allowed to be himself, not alone as he viewed the Leopard, but in peace knowing he was able to find love in the end. Anyway I give it a 7.5, hope to see polls come back for replacements. We're in for the battle of our lives if Madoka and Danmachi are up against each other.

Shawn Oxley

I thought he did too but at the same time i didn't think they'd actually use random peoples over ashs because thats invading their privacy further without consent

L Jeans

I think your feelings are valid, but you are missing an important part of the narrative. Ash achieves feats so great he brings down a gov scandal/coup. He does all that and still dies to a random thug on the street. Now he could have gotten medical help. But he decided to spend that time being with Eiji in that moment and reading his letter. Being in his presence, because the whole story everyone has taken things from Ash for their whole benefit except Eiji. Which Ash expresses many times, but in that moment Ash chose for himself what he wanted to do and no one took his power from him.

luis delgado

i hope you guys pick up something like iron blooded orphans, darker than black or hajime no ippo

Lil Uzi Vert

React to some ecchi

Kumi Chan

The ending is open ended, you can intrepret it as you see fit, but I know in the manga right after ash is seen in the library, it jumps to how shorter and ash met for the first time in juvenile detention. The arc called "Garden of light" which is a little side story that goes over shorter and ash's story through prison,

danial javady

React to Kara no Kyoukai? It's made by the same studio as Fate and Demon slayer.

qitty

I do see the beauty on one side, but on the other I'm stuck with this feeling that the choice in the first place wasn't great. I'm just of the opinion that that kind of narrative decision (having him killed by something trivial in comparison to the rest of the story to ground him) can feel hollow. It's not that it's a bad ending, since I can see the points people make and acknowledge what they appreciate from it, but I think from my experience with stories like this that deal with such raw human issues and ideas of hopelessness, love, etc. that an ending like this is inevitably disappointing in some way. And that's probably personal because I've seen who knows how many stories, especially queer stories, end with a "beautiful tragedy" approach. It's probably a combination of being too tired of traumatized and/or queer characters not getting to live lives and how the execution of it could've been better imo.

Big Daddy Dre

The dragon prince next?

Emily A

U THINK THIS IS A SOLID ENDING???????

Emily A

I have way too many thoughts and feelings about how this show ended, I cried my ass offffff man

Big Daddy Dre

Or the dragon prince since season 4 just got released 🤷🏾‍♂️

reeb

react to grand army, its not anime but its so good (short too - it was canceled)

Matrim Hall

If y'all noticed, Ash begged God to spare Eiji and take him instead in the early episode.

Jalan

React to Warrior on HBOMAX please🙏🏽🙏🏽

ki sa

Ash had 5 choices. 1. live like a Dino pet or something similar 2.die miserable 3.die miserable with smile 4.come to japan and live happily 5.stay in America and live miserable lools like 4 is best choice but this manga target was high school girls in Japan at 1985, so it could not be happened, mass murder Ash needed to go to jail before come to Japan for 300 years. (at least in fantasy world, all criminal needs to receive punishment, that's Japanese way ) so 3 is the best choice. 5, Ash would keep killing people and he hates it deadly.

Safire

lmao I kno right? I cried so much. I didn't want ash to die

Merfhew

I've never read it, but there's a manga called "Yasha" that takes place in the same universe as Banana Fish. I won't spoil the specifics, but Sing and Yut Lung are mentioned in it. I've been putting the series off for a few years now, hoping that it would get animated, but I might have to just read it instead.

Merfhew

Absolutely. Not enough people know about it. Such a great series.

Merfhew

Banana Fish also has a few side stories that weren't animated. The story "Garden of Light" features Eiji and Sing. It takes place about 7 years after the Banana Fish ending. There's also a story called "Angel Eyes" that tells us about how Ash and Shorter first met.

When Roshi calls it a solid ending, I think he means the author didn't end the series on an unrealistic "happily ever after" cliché. An ending where Ash + Eiji live together in Japan just wouldn't make sense, unfortunately.

aadimy

after this happened in the manga, it shows eiji being hella depressed and miserable after he learns abt ashs death. its rlly rlly sad

roven

(character spoilers for Yut Lung) if it makes you feel better, im pretty sure it was confirmed in YASHA (one of the mangaka's other mangas) that Yut Lung was actually assassinated sometime after the events of banana fish so yeah lmfao take that as you will

SeandaMay

Dragon prince, Lycoris Recoil or Akiba Maid Sensou next ??? Either one will be fine. 😁

SeandaMay

Yes, I've watched it and it was great imo. I want them to react to dragon prince as a trio. I think they will love that one as well. Both of these are long over due for a reaction, same with Akiba Maid Sensou. 6 episodes in and I am hooked. Lol

Daisuke_Takahiro

In 2019 I went to a con in Jersey where we met the creators, writers, and producers of Banana Fish and they all got to show us their favorite scene from the anime and all of them showed the same damn scene. Ash killing Shorter to save Eiji and we were all dying in the audience while on the panel they were laughing that they all had the same favorite scene.

angelalala

Unfortunately as much as there are genre-defying aspects of Banana Fish (which is what made it such a classic), it is still very much a product of its time. I've personally always felt that the ending was contrived in this manner because the mangaka couldn't envision a different ending since tragic endings were the only endings back then for queer characters. Plus the amount of torture she puts Ash through is very much en vogue of that queer stories back then(yes, I know it's officially genre-d as shoujo due to the magazine it ran in, don't come after me, manga police). Nonetheless, even with my dissatisfaction with it (probably also coming from a place of anger towards the treatment of such a great character), the ending did in many ways cement the story's cult status. Like Roshi, I also think the middle of Banana Fish wasn't the best. IMO felt like the mangaka wasn't really sure how to progress the story, so she had to rely on plot device Yut-Lung and shoehorn in a new villain (Colonel Fox) to repeat the whole formula again (people getting captured, Eiji/Ash separated again, etc. etc.). Still, I'm glad that Mappa animated it beautifully (kind of wish they kept the story in the same time period though), and that people are reacting/discovering this story again. Despite its flaws, it's really one of a kind.

ogking31

Can we got some reactions of eminence of Shadow after?

Stephen Delong

Once again asking for Kengan Ashura reaction 😂

fatiqsue

Would like to recommend Black Lagoon! It has a similar premise to Banana Fish (kinda) but its waaay more chaotic, much more action packed, and a lot more ridiculous. It's a classic gangster anime!

Mari

Duo reaction: Your Lie in April

Takeshi Kovacs

Hey Roshi you guys should watch BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense.

Diponmychip

I heard that show was supposed to get a second season sometime this year but I never a season 2

Danger Tomato

Watch Paranoia agent or monster

ShaquanVirse

Black Lagoon please

N1ckv3n

Next Anime for the Trio: Owari No Seraph or Seraph Of The End, It would be great if you watched it sooner or later PS. When will you watch the No Game No Life movie? It has now been 10 months since you finished the anime, please watch it.

lyssa

Black lagoon in dub or hajime no ippo would both be a good trio show to watch

rinnko60

Your Lie in April for Duo ? <3

Burning Talons

Black Lagoon in dub please

Lola

For duo: My Love Story, great anime with a great MC, it's real funny and heartwarming

Orlandez Malone

Bruh I never thought I'd say this but I want them to react to the latest Pokémon episode. That shit was so hype and had me tearing up ngl😭.

Merfhew

I wish there was a single, pinned thread dedicated to show requests. That way, fans of the shows currently being reacted to wouldn't have to sift through so many unrelated comments. No idea if Roshi reads the community tab, so I don't necessarily blame people for posting their requests where he's more likely to see, but it gets old after a while.

ColdFire 10

Y’all gotta watch Andor

wondung

Recomend witch from mercury It's new gundam series

Safire

I would love to see another poll where we react to a new anime show that is underrated. I could think of a few but wanted to see what everyone else thinks. Mine: Astra lost in space, Erased, 91 days, and PET (TK sings the OP).

Mari

If we talking underrated, seraph of the end is a must watch as well

Sun

What's next

Sun

I'm not one to comment on one's taste in anime, but respectfully, no way in hell.

N1ckv3n

Actually thinking, it's useless to start two new anime/series now that Banana Fish and Cyberpunk are finished, because then in December there will be Jojo and Alice In Borderland 2.

David

Bruh no offense I could never get into this but I watched it with y’all I’m glad it’s over 😂

Anime Tone

Some Black Lagoon would be dope

EmoBurrito

I doubt they'd react to it, but hope so! One of my favorite anime

Vayne

big agree on my love story; felt like i was smiling 24/7 watching this show

Vayne

Durarara!!! also under rated and gives Bungo vibes so i know theyd love it tbh

L Jeans

OMG 91 days is SO underrated Angelo is such a blood thirsty savage

Aerospark

Same. I was hype when it first started cause I thought it would fill the void that Gangsta left behind when it was cancelled...buut it definitely didn't and I just kept watching BF just to watch it. It didn't do it for me as far as story and I felt like the only reason they did anything in the story (most of the time) was to set up more BL scenarios and that's it lol

Clrissa young

i think you guys would like Link Click

I find it funny that in a way, Eiji, yet again caused Ash to get stabbed. LOL

ศศิภา จิวะไพศาลพงศ์

I tried to heal myself by reading the extra manga chapter about 7 years after Banana fish. Eiji live as a photographer in America and still hasn't move on. It's reveal that Eiji went back to Japan for a week. He still not fully recover but he went back to America to get Ash and found out that Ash was stabbed to death. It also reveal that Ash intentionally let himself bleed to death since the knife miss vital organ so it's a long painful death. He passed away with a smile on his face because he finally be able to protect Eiji (He believe that no matter where he went violence and misfortune will always follow him) yeah...RIP my fragile heart. Thank you author that's help a lot...
