I mean, technically Tanjiro was investigating. Because you know, it's possible to do the chores AND investigate simultaneously. That's kinda the whole point of going undercover, is to do the investigating in a way that doesn't arouse suspicion, or at least more than necessary.

It's interesting seeing how many people got confused (me as well while reading the manga) between both oirans and I think that was what the artist wanted. For people to think and be confused because some are saying that Tanjiro would've been able to know it through the scent but as we can see later on, he only realised later, through a sweet scent. It's not being dumb or slow, as I've seen in some comments in other reactions but intentional.
