I think while Lena is genuinely interested in getting to know the Eighty Six she also subconsciously held back in getting too familiar with them just because the people around her kept telling her not to get too attached to them. That's why she was so shocked when she realized she never asked for their real names.

I find it interesting that okay, the girl here doesn't like and wants to treat them better. But the other handlers, they're not stupid. They know what's going on, that's why you see in episode 1, all of them are always drunk. That's how they're dealing with it

Love Lena but when you first meet her she is definitely a bit on the pretentious side. She mentions this but the reason she fights for the 86 is because she thinks they're upholding the ideals of the country. She is a very idealistic person and it shows in how she acts/interacts with the 86. She doesn't discriminate against them, but at the same time she is holding them up as idealistic sacrificial heroes. She gets to know them, but is often seen romanticizing they're surroundings and situation. in reality they're just people who've grown up being forced to fight and die for a country they once called home. Love the characters in the show though, part of the reason its so good is because of the character depth. Love ya'lls reactions. Keep up the good work.

The 86 are treated like slaves, being forced to fight against their will. Even though Lena says she thinks of them as human, she is basically a kind slave master. She is still part of the system that oppresses them. However she also shows acts of kindness, so there's a conflict there in how they view her. Really interesting series.

That's not them dealing with pain or grief, they just don't give a damn because they expect the Legion to reach their operational lifespan in 2 years. The 86 exist to throw bodies at the problem and buy time until then. Not a single one of those handlers cares what happens to them because soon it won't matter either way. They don't have to do their jobs well or competently as long as the Grand Mur holds out long enough. Lena is the weird one because she's actually trying to do her job well and reduce casualties when no one else sees any point in doing so. On top of that, her trying to preserve the 86 goes against the army's intentions anyway. Once the Legion shuts down in 2 years they're going to have to decommission their weapons. Why would they want a bunch of 86 survivors at that point when they're likely going to kill them all anyway at that moment?

yeah no everything they said about her is right. she is basically like those people in modern times that say don't you know there are starving people in Africa but does nothing to actually help other people. Sure she treated them nicely, buts that the least she could do. Its not as if she's actually fighting with them.

They can't show them video feed because of the jamming. I think you guys are missing that point. The jamming is why they have to use people in the first place. The only reason they can even communicate is because of the para-RAID technology on their ears. It lets them share sensory audio information since normal radio signals would be jammed.
