13:25 Rewatching, just to clear the confusion, Rudy said the book was wrong, the book said people are born with a cap/max of how much magic power they might have, but Rudy tested it and saw that the more he practiced/used MP the more it kept on increasing, so there is no MP cap, you have to keep using it and it will keep growing. Also that Rudy has knowledge about science since he came from a way more advanced civilization, so he is able to do magic like the waterball stuff without the incantation because he has a very good understanding on the fundamentals about what water is, etc. This does apply to different or more advanced magic he might start using later on. His knowledge of science will make his magic more efficient, including being able to cast without incantations.

I think 1993's Magical Knight Rayearth is the real grandfather of modern isekai, because it was stupidly popular in Japan (it was made by CLAMP, after all) and inspired hundreds upon hundreds of trashy doujin (ametur manga) that ripped off the concept. The doujin community writing isekai eventually evolved into the web novel isekai and elements got added and subtracted from it over the decades.

Re zero came out in April 2012 (web novel) Mushoku tensei came out in november 2012 (web novel) Konosuba came out in December 2012 (web novel) so technically re zero would be the "grandfather" of isekai in this era but more people consider "familiar of zero" which was 2008 to be the first of the new era, and SAO to be the first major popular "isekai" if we count it in this category

A lot of these stories that are similar to Mushoku Tensei (Re:Zero, Shield Hero, etc) all started around the same time and come from an amateur novelist website. Since many of them started around the same time (2012), Mushoku didn't have the time to be influential or the "grandfather of isekai", rather it is the quintessential series of its genre. I'm also surprised people didn't warn you about something in the series, hope it doesn't scare you off because I love this series and am really excited to see your reactions.

Is it though? I mean the original internet novel only came out in 2012. Isekai itself has been a thing since the 80s lol. Even a lot of early popular anime like Inuyasha and Yu Yu Hakusho are isekais. Even RPG/Video game "isekais" SAO and .Hack came out before. Never understood the argument of Mushoku being the "father" of anything. /shrug. edit: Of course that doesn't mean I don't absolutely love Mushoku Tensei though (more than most isekais).

While he was weird and fucked up in his past life the whole point of his life was that because of who he was and what he looked like he got shit for it and constantly got harassed in his past life. You clearly do not understand why he was that way in his past life and the whole purpose of why his reincarnation is so great for him is so he can change as a person. He literally states exactly that in this first episode. I like redo of healer as well. I am quite a degenerate and watch some hentai here and there but I sympathize way fucking more with this MC because it is more relatable struggles than redo of healer where he got butt fucked and raped constantly and got put on hardcore drugs and physically and mentally abused. Redo of healer doesn't demonstrate the more normal struggles in life with the society we live in today while mushoku actually does.

A major theme of this story is that rudy was a terrible person in his past life. While alot of that was due to his life circumstances, he was a major perv and a jobless antisocial bum. Unlike many other shows like shield hero or even SAO rudy doesnt just become a cool guy once hes reborn, but instead has to work for it. This is a major point you guys will see since he gets even more pervy, but its nice seeing his realistic transformation over time.

Haven't watched the entire reaction yet so sorry in advance if you knew but this anime was really anticipated because it's basically the original isekai anime (think re zero or konosuba where a guy is teleported to another world). Even though those examples are some of the better isekai, the genre is absolutely flooded with trash isekai anime with a generic overpowered protag etc. Jobless reincarnation basically created alot of the tropes we see in most modern isekai, that said it does them REALLY fucking well. Buckle up this one's a ride. Also, remember that original rudy is NOT a good person. He's kinda intentionally shitty. It kinda helps contextualize some stuff about his character later

It might no have been explain all that well in the anime but the guy does have his old selfs memories but he still a new born person. And this is shows well with one example and that is in the very first episode when he said he sucked on his mothers boob but was not sexually aroused and that was because even though he had the memories of his previous self he is still a new baby in this world so his body isn’t attracted to her. That’s why his kid self might be attracted to this girls his age in this new life. Although I do agree he needed to stop himself from doing anything even if his new self liked the girls that were his age he still knew they were really young. And that’s why I was glad he got his ass kicked by her. Please, please, remember always MC was trash. Don't try to empathize with him, don't think this is a kid show and don't think this guy is some cliché hero that would do everything right. I know you probably don't think of him like that from this chapt nor the next, but if you forget it, then you could even drop the series... The story overall is great, but MC has some issues, I hope you enjoy the series and not just the MC.

Aight, I came to party, so lets get down to it. Potential Spoilers. This character IS, in FACT, a perv. I challenge any one of you to spend upwards of 20 years of your life as a figurative, and now literal, man-child, day in and day out jerking it to anime porn, which, btw, is almost universally made up of underaged characters, then get magically whisked to this fantasy world and not carry that baggage with you. That point might seem shallow, since the writer still wrote the character that way, but lets not cast aspersions and assume intentions. There are reasons characters like this exists, mainly because the writers like to make fun of, or in this case, realistically represent, the type of people that spend their lives hooked on anime even well into adulthood, still obsessed with characters and ideas that were, at one point, appropriate for them. In fact, there are lots of characters like this. Another that comes to mind is Araragi Koyomi from the Monogatari franchise. We call this trope the "Scumbag with a Heart of Gold" or "NEET" or "Hikkikomori" or any number of other things. It's very common. What should be understood about this show and characters like this is that, despite their tendencies, there are usually a few important factors at play with how they are written. A) They are generally admonished for their actions, usually with violence, B) they do what might be considered "good deeds" to counter-balance their negative tendencies, C) they almost never actually cross "the line" and most of the heinous stuff they do is played for comedy at their expense, and whether or not you find that brand of comedy funny is entirely up to you, and lastly D) There's often some form of provided contextual loophole in the situation which is, itself, poked fun at, a la the 9000 year old loli trope. This is just the reverse of that, and what I find funny if that if it were the 9000 year old loli trope, we'd be having the same discussion despite both technically being adults in that case. Personally, I like this character AND Araragi a whole heck of a lot because of the good things they do accomplish and the ways in which their better nature affords the people around them a lot of genuine emotional support. This character will steal a girls panties and literally attempts to sexually harass another underage girl later on by peeking under her dress while she sleeps.... which is immediately followed by him getting his ass kicked. The entire time the scene was happening I was thinking "oh jesus dude, stop. Control yourself, you pervert" and the appropriate comeuppance that ensued was enough for me to move past it. He then proceeded to teach her to read and write, perform magic, went out of his way to give her one of the best most memorable birthday experiences of her life, and proceeds to fight beside her and protect her from the dangers of the outside world for the remainder of the series. What I'm saying is, pervy jackass characters can be pretty fun. If nothing else, they're fun to discuss. They aren't "good people", and that's the point of writing them that way. NO ONE IS ADVOCATING FOR THEIR BEHAVIOR. No one is defending pedophiles, it's just fun to discuss a character's actions and thought processes. 'Tis a cartoon with a character performing some gross actions. We can discuss it to death, and it's pretty fun for me to do so, whether or not these characters are "good" or "bad", pedophiles" or not, and hell, maybe he is. Just bear a couple things in mind: it's a cartoon, no one is actually being harmed or threatened, and in any kind of real life context this sort of shit might have been okay a couple decades ago and might still be okay in certain countries, but for the most part, no one is imagining this stuff is anywhere close to acceptable behavior. That's my 2 cents. Been having this discussion since 2012, and I'm starting to see a lot of the same old talking points, so you're either gonna live and let live, or just enjoy the show with us. It's up to you. Either way, it wont affect anything and that's exactly how it should be.

A lot of these comments are trash and focusing on pedophilia for no reason. SPOILER ALERT... Roxy is like 45 years old. Here demon race lives for about 200 years and they're short. But even with that aside, do you all just want to watch a show where everything is sunshine and roses? The things that usually draw people into shows are usually relatable or things that people can actually picture happening. Especially in anime because we get so used to the common tropes that when a show has logical or understandable reactions in it, like this one, people are shocked and either react in the stupid way most of you are or actually step back and enjoy the refreshing show. I highly encourage any light novel readers to pick this one up. It's still ongoing and every single book has been amazing and filled with character development and amazing moments that make you think.
