So in the most basic terms, the massive amount of bubbles created by the rapid conversion of the methane hydrate into methane gas (methane hydrate deposits are very sensitive) more or less just completely fucked the buoyancy of all the ships on top of it being not even a stable new buoyancy as it's bubbles, which ended up causing the ships to not be able to stay upright.

Methane Hydrate is an underground/underwater natural gas people mine and then store underwater. Because it is gas, when you expose it underwater in high volume, it comes out like a GIANT BUBBLE BATH, and basically flips and messes up all the subs and ships underwater and above water. In simple terms, imagine u put a paper boat in a soda cup, put it a straw in the cup, and blow into the straw. the boat would be screwed.
