It's not plot convenience. Okuyasu basically had the willpower to not die. And willpower is a major factor in death, as people have willed themselves to stay alive longer than their bodies normally should let them be alive for. Or in cases where the person is completely healthy, have died due to immense grief. That's why " Death by a broken heart " is a thing. Or people in commas either coming out of it or not, willpower can be argued to be a factor in that.
