Her Paternal bloodline is strong too. The royal family is no joke. Not only can they fire bend they seem to be a master at martial arts and Parkour. Zuko and Azula can still fight without bending. She was dodging all of aangs attacks even without the sun.

The show always showed Mei refusing to follow Azula's orders on occasions , like refusing to go down the mud sludge pipe in the Drill episode and letting Sakka & Toph leave the palace without a fight in the season 2 finale.

It just occured to me while watching this how deeply rooted the skewed idea of "honor" is for the fire nation. Remember back when Azula somehow convinced Mei not to save her own baby sibling because keeping a King hostage was more important? I feel like that bs could only happen with people who grew up in the fire nation. And the Warden was willing to be dropped in boiling water for the sake of his prison break record. Even down to the kids not understanding dancing for fun, or even Zuko's story.. It seems like the fire nation taught it's people to value honor and accomplishments over both people you love, and your own well being. That's the only way this crap would fly. That's how people trash talk Iroh who lost his whole son because it's more important that he failed at Ba Sing Sei, or trash talk Zuko for being a failed banished prince while ignoring that his dad crispied his face. Even Sosen threw away his best friend once he realized what he could accomplish without him, it's wild. No wonder Zuko had such a hard time figuring out the right way-- His country was screwed in it's ideology even without his relation to both Roku and Sosen

if you go back in the past eps, you see how Mai and Ty Lee were done with Azula from jump. Mai side-eyed her when Azula interrupted her date with Zuko, and during the beach episode, the only time she chose to express herself by yelling at Azula. Also if you go back to season two, when they impersonate the Kyoshi warriors and the Earth king is telling them about Long Feng, Azula says 'it's horrible when you can't trust the people closest to you' Mai and Ty Lee look at each other
