Yeah the show does a good job at explaining rules, positions, techniques, terms, etc. so don't sweat it if you're not familiar with the sport :)

After this I recommend Kuroko No Basket for the same reasons everyone loves this series. Funny, character building and amazing animation.

nobody has said but "the ace" isn't a position, it's a name given to the strongest spiker on the team, someone that can spike the ball past a 2-3 person block. You'll learn the positions but the ace is usually a wing spiker which is a spiker either positioned on the left or the right of the court.

"Karasuno" means "crow", btw. You'll see a lot of animal comparisons throughout the series as most schools in this series are named after animals and carry an animal theme. There are quite a few bird themes in particular.

That's also the story of Eyeshield 21(football), Hajime no Ippo (boxing), and if you count Board Game Sports Anime then Hikaru no Go and Chihayafuru to an extent. All of which are great shows
