The bird attacked komugi because it reverted to the same animalistic instincts that meruem was using when he was trying to convince himself to kill komugi. This show has by far the best writing

God Meruem is such a great character. Imagine some other big bad of a fighting show spending most of his screen time playing a damn board game with a peasant girl.

Someone will probably explain it better but the Eagle is reflecting the King's nature/attitude. You see it when he's giving the speech, it's chilling while he's reflecting on the nature of potential and value of life, it starts wilding out when he starts wilding out on his power, and it's attacking Komugi as he decides he should kill Komugi. So no like, *logical* reason for it to attack but it is nice symbolism to have him kill a (at the time) physical representation of his violent nature and in doing so start to realize his capacity for empathy

Also, while Meruem's a Tyrant, he's really a deep thinker lol. Gotta give him credit for dropping gems all around. On the other hand, Komugi's a true gungi genius. Think back to the Yorknew Arc's auction scenes. Ben's knives (flea market and Killua's dad), appraiser's counterfeit artworks etc... all showed nen residue even though the creators weren't necessarily fighters. Togashi loves bringing previous concepts back in the narrative.

Remember way back when they first mentioned Nen, they said genius's at the pinnacle of their field are usually the ones to awaken Nen? Komugi has been improving so much playing against the King that she "Awakened" a Nen to improve her Gungi skills to the next level.

I love how they are showing the split in the Kings mind, it is really showing the growth and development of the king vs his inner struggle as he is growing but doesn't understand it. Love, love, love it.

I always really liked him asking his royal guards what his name is it futher emphasises what each of them is about. Pouf wants the King to be number 1 in the world the supreme ruler, Youpi doesn't 100% understand the king but is still loyal and supportive and Pitou just tells him to follow his feelings. Really sets up futre events when you think about it

Also we've already seen Pouf would die for the King without a second thought. A few episodes ago when the King tore off his arm Pouf wouldn't back down on the King getting his arm fixed so the King told him he was going to kill him. He said come close and I'll make it quick and Pouf was just like ok sounds good to me boss. He was absolutely going to let the King kill him there just to stand by his point.

Damn son it just occurred to me after rewatching this for like the 100th time... Gon and Neferpitou are almost exactly the same character. Kind of lovably dorky, super dedicated to the person close to them, but other than that, their biggest joy is just fighting other strong people. But because of how things turned out, they are irreconcilably on opposite sides.

That's just wrong. Gon is selfish AF. He was willing to have his best friend destroy his hands just to win a dodgeball game. He enjoys fighting sure but no where near the extent of Pitou. Gon doesn't even seek out or express the desire to fight strong people. The only reason he wanted to challenge Hisoka was because of his selfish pride.
