The whole part about nen being used by geniuses outside of combatants is very important. It shows that the system in this world isn't limited to battling. This will be a constant theme throughout, so don't focus only on battles. The world building of HxH is on another level.

All that Nen was coming from Hisoka. Like he said he’s been watching them the whole time, he actually was there first just concealing himself and then the girl showed up. That’s why Gon and Killua felt that hostile aura cus he doesn’t want them to pass.
