This is just a theory, but I think Wolfwood stopped the ship from accelerating by shutting off the engine while Vash asked the plant to help kill the ship's momentum.

I forgot how ABSOLUTELY INSANE the plant plotline was in trigun 😂 I didn’t understand it fully in the first show… I think on purpose. I hope they elaborate more in this one
