USA and France famous bombed the shit out of Bikini Atoll during atomic bomb testing. It is the basis of the Spongebob universe. Godzilla seems to be a prehistoric creature that underwent immense mutations from the bombings, and that scene of when it happened was his skin burning from the heat. Canonically the Godzilla lore specifically states that his skin was designed to visually reflect the effects of radiation poisoning in humans.

Haven't finished the video yet so sorry if y'all talk about this, but the whole thing with Godzilla getting bigger wasn't that he wasn't fully grown, it's that he literally mutated from all of the radiation from the atomic bombs. You can even see it in how the two forms move; the smaller one is very fluid and natural because that's how he's supposed to be, whereas the big mutated one walks way more stiffly/painfully and literally almost looks like a burn victim.

Small history lesson if you want. Operation Crossroads shown in the movie was a real test done by the US to see the effects of nuclear bombings on ships. Basically a big part of the US WW2 fleet and some ships the US took after the war were used. I never looked to see if Minus one followed the original lore of Godzilla. I think this movie is just using it as a by chance basis that Zilla was near Bikini Atoll just as the test happened.

G-Cells babyyyyyy. Thats that Godzilla magic right there Glad y’all checked this out but if y’all loved this and want even more terrifying Godzilla action, then you have GOT to watch Shin Godzilla. Its the other Japanese made Godzilla movie before this one and is just as good as Minus One(and also has the largest live-action Godzilla so far) I think Minus One and Shin compliment each other really well as modern Godzilla movies. Minus One is like a current modern retelling of the old school very first Godzilla movie from 1954 and just like that, has a lot to say about the fallout of nuclear weapons through Godzilla’s design and rage. While Shin is refitting Godzilla for this modern day and age and has a lot to say more so about the human side of things Really hope y’all do a reaction to it

I know I’ve already said this, but now that I’ve watched the reaction I definitely recommend Shin Godzilla, not only was it directed by the creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion, but it also has a great human story as well, albeit not as good as this one, but it’s Godzilla makes up for it. It’s probably the most interesting Godzilla I’ve ever scene. Please consider watching it. Fun fact. That was on the smaller and somewhat weaker side of Godzillas. That plan would not have worked on most of the others. He has been hit with everything from regular weapons to black holes guns and meteors as big as him. Even monsters far bigger than himself and has survived almost all of it. Only a handful of times has Godzilla been defeated and even less actually killed.

Watched this movie on the flight to Japan in April, and I've been waiting since for ya'll to do a reaction!!! Noriko's marks have me hoping if we aren't getting Biollante we are getting some other kaiju variant or similar to what someone else in the comments said, we are gonna get a protector Godzilla. I want a sequal NEOW but i also want them to take their time cus this was a MASTERPIECE! And little Akiko stole my heart!! This is now my 3rd time rewatching, I gotta get a collector's edition of this when it drops!

was on the fence if I should wait for your upload or just watch it by myself. Needless to say, its probably the best they ever did with the human characters in any godzilla movie, but for me its on par overall with Shin Godzilla. Them Japanese know their godzilla.

Regarding the black rain after his atomic breath (laser beam). Took this from an excerpt regarding the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The ash from the blast had the effect of 'seeding' the clouds and the result was a 'black rain' which fell 1-2 hours after the explosion. This rain, which almost had the consistency of tar, was a combination of the ash, radioactive fallout, and water. In at least some cases, severe radiation burns resulted. Also important to remember that Gojira (yeah I'm using his Japanese name) was created to be a metaphor for an atomic disaster. And he's actually radioactive without the atomic breath. And about him being menacing, having grown up watching some the original Japanese Godzilla movies, I've always seen him as a predatory animal defending its territory. Not so much a hero really, sorta like "No one, and I mean NO ONE fucks up, murders, terrorizes the humans except me!!!" But this one of my favorite Godzilla movies, tied with Shin Godzilla. Saw it in theaters with my nephews and loved. An interesting thing one of them pointed out was that at the end, during the sea battle, no one died. Very poignant considering the speech Noda makes about not wanting anyone to die.

Honestly the VFX in Shin Godzilla seem too low budget or even unfinished for me to take the character seriously and not instead see the 3d model and animations and the compositing work of the artists. They used their VFX budget a lot better in this film and it still blows my mind how it was only made for 15 mil. I'd call Shin Godzilla cool, unsettling, creepy, but not scary. To me, it just never felt like he actually exists in the environment like the Minus One Godzilla does.

I don't think how Noriko survived really matters. Her survival is a sort of karmic reward for Koichi choosing life. And if you're concerned about realism or logic, remember that this movie is about a giant lizard that shoots nukes out of its mouth.

I just learned about this Godzilla movie 10 min ago on an RT TV comment section thread. I personally never like Godzilla movies cuz they were mostly all budget with mediocre story/acting which was underemphasized (mainly hollywood westernized ones). But 10 min ago I learned about "Godzilla minus 1" and IMMEDIATELY RACED OVER TO YABOYROSHI to see if they watched it so i can watch it alongside their reaction. Her being alive makes it good because he's awarded for choosing to live. He had the option to just not pull the lever and die, but he choose to live, and is awarded for that choice with Noriko being alive.

When I saw this in theaters I felt that they telegraphed (no pun intended) the two points for the end. By going to that wide shot they don't show you that he's got an ejection seat and the telegraph showing up we knew that she was fine.

Not me personally, but some people thought it was going to result in him not ejecting because the mechanic sabotaged the seat. Mainly because of three scenes. When he looks at the seat, when he tells Koichi that the others wanted to live too, and when he says to finish it. That made some people think he purposely made sure to disable the ejector.

You're wrong my guy, they built a model but replaced him with CGI for almost every shot. It's incredibly common to shoot with the reference and then cover it up later. To anyone who works in CG/VFX like me, lighting gives it away instantly. I encourage you to look up more breakdowns to get a better idea of how they made it. If by "captured in camera" you mean mocap, then yeah, thats how they drove the primary animation. Video game animations are also "captured in camera" by that logic. Doesnt mean that the seams between the mocap poses or the other movement outside of the human sized skeleton isn't animated on top. There are a lot of layers and VFX cleanup that go into every aspect of creating something like Godzilla. The blood simulations and some destruction also looks like early 2000s quality when we have had really good destruction sims down for over a decade now. Again, just not enough funding for their vision, imo. The script is incredible though.

I mean, he definitely could hurt it with the 20mm gun, but there is no guarantee that he could kill it. The most likely scenario is Godzilla would be hurt, but still be able to chomp/ stomp/ smash him before he could do any serious damage to it.

I legit teared up at this film. The dynamic between the protagonist and his not-wife and his not-daughter was genuinely compelling and beautifully tragic, and his demons and struggle with PTSD was incredibly well handled. The initial nihilistic tone of the film, only to flip and reject that notion at the end... yeah, I really liked this movie.

No not typically. Some versions of Godzilla are a little like that But this one and most classic versions of Godzilla are mainly just weird dinosaurs mutated by radiation(and in constant pain to reflect the threat and damage of nuclear warfare) and a part of the mutation here is something called Godzilla-Cells which are like cells on crack and do all types of weird shit depending on the movie
