Pretty much got it yeah. To add, her Father was THE ruler of Japan, but was known to be cruel and ruining the realm, so Toranaga and Mariko's father plotted to have him killed and the Taiko installed in his place. She got married off to the Taiko to legitimize his status as the new ruler.

It's not the clearest but her family killed the dude who ruled before the Taiko shown in episode 2 began ruling.

The scene in the brothel were Kiku was speaking through Mariko to Blackthorne but essentially was speaking as Mariko. Amazing scene man. Everybody involved was so good in it. I love how subtly Kiku shows that she can see that they are in love with each other.

Yo, I really like how Mariko says " I offer you relief" (emphasis on "I") when in the previous statements, she's quick to point out that "she"(Kiku) said these words. Nice touch on a great scene.

@Oliver Yeah considering how close to the actual historical figures they are it's strange they just made up new names for them but Mariko's father is basically Akechi Mitsuhide, the guy he murdered and Ochiba's father is Oda Nobunaga, the Taiko was Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Toranaga is Tokugawa Ieyasu.

Exactly. I think the reason the names are different in the novel is because of artistic freedom. If you straight up say their name you have to be historical accurate or it will be categorized as satire or something else

Man lady Mariko was burning a hole through John's head the way she was staring at him the morning after pillowing with kiku also couldn't agree more with lupa the way lady ochiba talks is so unnerving but I hang on every word the actresses in this show are killing it for me.
