bleach

PEAK! Also you guys should watch Tokyo Vice

Alexia

LET'S GOOOOOOO

Tejiri Ubiedi

Now that nigga in the discord with the Azula PFP can shut the fuck up 💀

Blake

Bro we’re lit bron

Freddupe

Y’all gotta give Tokyo vice a try after this one. It’s on Max

PJ Rivera

If anybody is confused on what “cathay” means its an old European word for china. Also fun fact they’re speaking an older version of japanese in this show

Devin Witt

Awesome! Love how it seems they stick as close to historical authenticity as possible. Hiroyuki Sanada is always exceptional to watch as well!

Carlos

If you all love this I beg you to watch Black Sails someday. Peak show right there.

Frederick

I’m on episode 5 right now and this is 🔥 y’all are going to enjoy this

fly

oh i pray to god they do cause that show is fucking amazing

Fazzywazzy

Another 3 person reaction. As always, when all 3 are here together the reactions are golden

Danger Tomato

It's great but I hate that white dudes voice, black sails got it right.

Sonic

Love Tokyo Vice, would be perfect for this channel

Metweet .c

The protestants and catholics have a deep beef plain and simple at this period of time. Protestants do not take the blessed sacrament of bread and wine whilst catholics do. It also really mattered if rulers were Catholic or protestant so the church of England has been established by this point by henry the eight with his protestant daughter Elizabeth 1st ruling. I really had to remember by horrible histories lore there from my childhood lol

Metweet .c

2 peaky blinders actors appearances. The captain who shot himself was Tommys uncle and John was the sniper that suffered from ptsd that Tommy released from the insane asylum

Anorak

Never seen black sails but this feels like a nitpick lol. I think he’s doing a great job

macrowave

I already watched The History of Japan I Guess on youtube so I guess i don't need to watch this

Metweet .c

The one that John handed the gun to, to kill himself in the beginning

cami ً

this show is honestly phenomenal

Professor00

Not only is it based off a book, it’s also a remake of an extremely popular mini-series on TV during the early 80’s.

Metweet .c

Well he is a pilot major so he comes from a wealthy background at this time period. We're lucky that this is in modern English and not so accurate that he's speaking with a mix of today's English, Shakespearean and Latin. His accent makes sense.

saintvenom

Glad you guys are watching this.

David Gray

It's super confusing, but from looking, they are speaking protuguese however they are using English as a substitute to avoid having so many languages mixed in English is the perfect languages for everyone to communicate in instead of finding actors/actresses who speak Japanese, Portuguese, Dutch and English hence why they use it as a substitute

Magic Man

Anytime Blackthorne or any other character is speaking "English" they are speaking Portuguese.

Mubarez Ahmad

Toranaga reminds me of Ned Stark bro. I feel like he's gonna die, it's always the good and honorable ones

Metweet .c

You guys should watch Martin Scorsese's silence that looks at Portuguese priests in japan. I personally think its one of his more underrated movies

Robert

John Blackthrone played Barney (the sniper) in Peaky Blinders season 5

Gilthwixt

Sorry Sheera but I think Roshi had it right and they were "speaking Portuguese" but actually speaking English IRL and we just have to suspend disbelief and imagine they're speaking Portuguese. Rewind to around 28:45 where the first translator showed up before he gets taken before the minor lord and the priest. He's speaking English there but there's no way he actually speaks English, he's a Japanese native that converted to catholicism via Portuguese missionaries, why would they bother teaching him English? Especially when the existence of other European kingdoms is supposed to be a secret. It was probably too difficult/time consuming to ensure all their actors could speak three different languages (4 in Rodriguez' case) so Japanese/English only it is.

PJ Rivera

Like how in warrior they show them speaking english to each other but chinese when in front of other people. I wish they had that transition in ep1 of warrior where they switch from chinese to english

Briana J

Yeah, this is based on a real-life Englishman who became a samurai. This show is so good, I'm glad they gave the Japanese characters more life in this adaptation because the book and first mini-series didn't do that. There are quite a few Japanese entertainment OGs in this too which I love to see. They took special care to show a more realistic portrayal of Japan at this time.

AsuraTM

Roshi is correct. The characters are speaking English to the audience to simplify things so we don’t have to hear 3 languages. However in the show they are speaking Portuguese to each other when they are translating or aren’t speaking Japanese

Jon Fejes

The Protestant/Catholic beef at the time was real and enduring. Europe was at war for a lot of the 1500s and 1600s over it. Blackthorne is a good Protestant and hates Catholics on principle.

Alex

25:25 yeah it was fucked up and they'd kill a whole family off for what looks like the weirdest things. Look up the story of Hajime Fujii, he wanted to participate in a suicide attack during WW2, got rejected from participation as he had a family and was an instructor at the flight school, so his wife killed herself and their daughters so he could join up in the attack. She dressed them up in their best clothes and drowned them, leaving a letter: "Since you probably would be worried about us and not be able to freely carry out your duties because we are here, we go ahead before you and will wait for you. Please fight without reserve" Japan was brutal for a long time.

Hasnain Khan

Yehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Sheraya san

Watch succession pls! Y’all won’t regret it. It’s won a ton of awards, it’s sooo good

Fazzywazzy

Ps. No jabs intended to their 2 man reactions. Its just that when the 3 of them are together is when they are at their best. Just good chemistry together

Aaron Gauntt

It's easy to miss but John me tons early on that he speaks fluent Portuguese so yes, they are speaking Portuguese just translated into English for the audience, likely to simplify things for the show.

Magnatank

They are speaking portugese, but its english for us, you will see next episode. Bae only knows japanese and portugese, so him speaking english wouldnt work with her, At the start when him and his crew were in the hole he said he speaks fluent portugese. English isnt spoken in japan yet, because only the spanish and portugese know how to get there.

Bria A.

This show is so damn good, glad I finally have the motivation to watch it.

Smash Bran'Discootch

By the way, the main English dude also played Barney in Peaky Blinders. He was the guy that Tommy broke out of the mental institution to be his sniper.

Antonio Williams

The crew was English and spoke English to one another. From now on, anything said in English is just the character's speaking Portuguese

Antonio Williams

At first I thought you were calling her "bae". I was like...I get it but tdamn that's bold

Magnatank

Yeah im further into the series so she is bae for john later haha

Erd'na

All i came here to say is Blackthorne is based on real person William Adams. And Toranaga is based on Ieyasu Tokugawa. I thought it might help you understand the story more.

John Smith

Why does Lord Ishido remind me of Otto Hightower

Erica Collins

The crazy thing is, the guy who got his head cut off wasn't the one who was asking questions and was told to back away. I rewatched it so many times just because your reactions were funny af and realized that it was just some random guy who decided to go in front of John thinking no one would see him just to do those motions with his hands 😭

Kass

In the beginning of the episode, Blackthorne said that he's fluent in Portuguese so the best guess is that he was speaking portuguese. It's just in English so we understand, kind of like Warrior. When his crew arrived, the people there immediately asked for a translator who speaks portuguese.

godUsoland

When John's speaking, even though it is in English he's speaking in Portuguese. He knows how to speak English, Dutch, and Portuguese. Those were the 3 Big Trade languages for sailors at the time. His crew is Dutch, so when he is with them, he speaks Dutch. Everyone else, he is speaking in Portuguese as that is their common shared language. He would only speak English if talking to another Englishman, or back home.

Mr

Bro got the R Kelly special 😭

sotonye ogan

Shame this show only last one season

Erd'na

Hiroyuki Sanada(Toranaga) is a producer in this series. He insist on hiring Japanese actors if they want him to act in this series. And i think he has something to do with Japanese speaking their native tongue. So i do think the producers made it intentional that when acting to speak in Portuguese. They are using the english language. Because they do not want their audience to keep reading. Probably to cater to those audience who do not like reading subtitles. Intentional. Also this series is mostly shot in Vancouver. It's an awesome series based what they been doing so far.

Dyastro

Ahhhh is it "i hate Christianity" tokugawa?......if so, then this will be interesting.....I find it ironic that his spy is someone who believes in God, considering what he does to those who do once he gets in power.

Ghost_Troupe

Yeah it's that Tokugawa, but it was less "I hate Christianity" and more "I hate the Spanish" he was afraid that they were planning to conquer Japan so banning Christianity was his way of keeping them out. The movie "Silence" takes place 30 years after this specific event.

Thurman

Nah. Black Sails would be a much better choice. Succession can wait. Endless reactions to that show already.

Erd'na

William Adams is a protestant. Tokugawa took Adams protestant prejudices towards Catholics seriously. Tokugawa felt the Catholics were trying to divide and conquer Japan. This is after Tokugawa became the Shogun.

Anorak

I took John’s reaction to the dude about to kill himself as more one of horror that he would throw his life away so easily, because it’s just driving home how cheap life can be here (like with the dude and the baby). That’s why he said, ‘he didn’t even fight,’ when talking to Rodrigues.

earthphoenix7068

This Protestant vs Catholic takes me back to the olden days.

Sheera: "I'm literally stabbing my husband" Husband: *Right next to her* LMAOO

Godrick

Samurai are like Native Americans.. when you need a couple from the industry for your film/show there's only like 12 to choose from 😂

Champion Bescos

Tadanobu Asano (the man who nearly committed senpuku when he fell from the cliff) was in Silence as well!

Champion Bescos

Jesus. As a sane human, but especially as a husband and father, this shit is actually nightmarish. This is the type of story I actually find horrific to hear or would be afraid to see out to film (as opposed to paranormal or supernatural fare), as it would and follow me into my sleep… Humans have such a propensity to be awful.

DIOR

white people saw yasuke n wont stop makin these shows now

WAY

Why is it a shame? If they are able to tell a concise quality story in 10 episodes, why extend it and potentially muddy it.

Erd'na

It's better not perfect. There some minor stuff that series got wrong like Jesuits not wearing orange robes. Which is something they did to be taken seriously in Japan. Because Buddhist monks wore orange. Another the handguns used were in the wrong timeline. Other than that, they been spot on.

lomez

I thought the MC was English but the rest of the crew was Dutch.

Carlos

Both. Back to back on the same schedule would be my dream lol

Carlos

...so like y'all gonna watch that X-Men 97 for the channel? Because it's FIRE.

Aaron Griffin

57:15 yes! I've been calling him Temu Tom Hardy

dom

wasnt expecting a peaky blinders reunion at the start of the show

BabyFoodChewer

More like some kinda homunculus version of the guy who plays Peeta in the hunger games. Like they stole some of his dna and tried to replicate him but mostly failed

HIM

But Yasuke was seen as trash by consensus, no? If it inspired this and Blue eye Samurai, then I'll take the W.

Carlos

It's like Cobra Kai, you'll get a lot out of having watched what came before but they do enough to fill you in on the new status quo. If you do want some context though there is a recap video that they officially released to go over some significant story beats.

HIM

If this isn't just the live action version of Blue Eye Samurai, then IDK what is 😆. The visuals, the shots, angles, costume and set design, even the set up of the story, the time period, etc. (I could go on and on) is VERY much the same as everything I saw in BES. Which is a GOOD thing! I LOVE IT! Just wish I had Hulu, so I didn't have to risk getting Scurvy from all this Pirating I have to do to watch it 😂

Nightwing2090

This series has not only brought back memories of the 1980 mini series but some personal memories as well. I remember my mother having a crush on Richard Chamberlain. My father taking the novel to work to read during his breaks and me flipping through the novel as soon as he got home. I was only going to watch one episode but this series is so well done I watched the two available episodes back to back Even the CGI is nearly flawless. The characters, the exploitation and power plays are so well done and written. Looking forward to the next episodes.

Chris

Yeah, it helps some but quite honestly a basic knowledge of who the X-Men are will get you through just fine. They do a pretty good job of making sure you know the status quo even if you haven't watched the original show or a recap.

VanessassaryEvil

Roshi and Lupa were right on this one lol, they are speaking "Portuguese"

Thulani Mason

This was fucking epic!

Sham3ful

They actually gave that man the Oden treatment from OP, I'd rather just tortured than boiled to death

Anime4Life

Where are the Black People ?

Husky

the guy who committed seppuku looked like Leon from Snowfall

Husky

John (the MC) he's speaking Portuguese but they're doing it in English for us.

DxShadow

Yeah that complaint was the dumbest shit when the show came out istg

JotaroDrake

O ma ain’t no way he pissed on his head

Champion Bescos

I couldn’t believe that was a legitimate article. Both hilarious and worrying times we live in.

Champion Bescos

Yasuke? The anime that not only absolutely sucked, but was barely somewhat loosely inspired by a sole black man who was a notable retainer for a famed samurai lord? Lmao. Yeah… That didn’t inspire shit, least of all not an epic about European powers integrating and forcing their way into a dire time of conflict and conquest in Japan. This show is based off a book published forty or so odd years ago, a tv show from the 80’s, and all inspired by actual historic events... So, the fuck does white people or any race for that matter have to do with anything? On top of that, what other shows even have white people set in feudal Japan right now aside from BES?

MonarchXIII

He is, but for production's sake we're suppose to pretend he's speaking Portuguese instead of English (unless he's speaking to fellow Englishmen).

Derick

At 31:08 did they change actors and forget?

Elle E.

VERY Good! So on edge with the sailing/drowning scene!

Alvin

Yeah John is English but he mentions he speaks fluent Portuguese as well so whenever they are speaking English in the show it’s mostly Portuguese in universe

Matrim Hall

This man's the reason they got that extra chair in the corner of the motel rooms.

camille

So John is “speaking Portuguese” but it’s in English. Are we to assume that all English in this show is supposed to be Portuguese? Why not just have them speak actual Portuguese and not English to curb down confusion?

Moon God

Anytime you hear English in the show you can assume it is Portuguese. They did that since its an American production, so the main audience is English (having a full Portuguese-spoken show produced in America isn't a good idea). There is also another historical part to it but that'd be spoilers for later in the show.

Dyastro

Yeah I know that the Christianity ban was more a reason to unite Japan and get rid of any European influence. And it worked out very good. Doesn't change the fact that alot had to die tho lol

Mervyn Larrier

If you see John speaking to any European that isn't his crew, he's speaking Portuguese. That's the whole story with that

Danny

Yasuke literally didnt inspire shit. Like the guy above explained, this book been around for ages. And why this gotta be a "race" thing. Dumb mofos like you think everything is based off race that race this. Anyone also mention to you that literally one of the directors for this show is black? "white ppl" thing. i aint even white but that shit just sounds stupid af. so overly used and oftentimes in the least amusing scenarios.

Sasha

Physical 100 reaction coming?

DreAKAWolves

I'm surprised ya'll didn't talk more about that baby situation that was WILD af

KapZachlan

Best show on TV right now

speedy

as soon as i saw the head pop off i was like yump, im tuned😭

TheRuudster

Blackthorne is a protestant christian, and they hate catholics like the Portuguese and the Spanish. that's what homie got the beef with them... among other reasons that the show will go deep in

Giyuu

But when they were all talking in the hole it was English and then he said I speak a little Portuguese and I’m guessing he’s saying that because they people that Japan has traded with spoke that language so he’s assuming that they’re people in Japan that must speak Portuguese… idk lmao

Jazz Rivers

Is it just me or did dude who was gettin ready to crash out look like a Japanese Leon from Snowfall??? 😂😂

fili0938

It's not based on book one in a series. There is no series. It's a standalone book.

SlashZaku

Ok, so it's not just me. Something about the face features immediately reminded me of Leon.

the_remora

Blackthorn speaks English (mother tounge), Dutch, Portuguese, Spanish and Latin. If he is speaking with the crew he is speaking Dutch, any time he is speaking to anyone else it's likely Portuguese. The Franciscan Monk is supposed to be a Spaniard but it wasn't mentioned and it probably pulls away from the core story to much to go into that conflict.

the_remora

Also at the time Spain and Portugal were the western world powers. With the backing of the Catholic Church the entire new world either belonged to Spain or Portugal. The dividing line ran through what is now Brasil which is why they speak Portuguese instead of Spanish like the rest of Latin America.

Myles Guy

When bro gets his head off that’s a top 10 reaction

lyssa

Classic religion bad 😒

howwlll

Might be remembering this wrong, but I could swear I've hear Lupa talk about Lost before - Rodrigues is Richard Alpert

dobley

Roshi's ability to remember names is something🔥 Many viewers have struggled with it at this show

howwlll

I was having some trouble, so I pulled up the Wikipedia and spoiled myself on who the characters are based on. If you know about this time period, don't do what I did

howwlll

What do you mean? I might be interpreting the comment wrong, but the guy who got his head cut off just walked up. He wasn't either of the two Japanese Christians who were talking before

howwlll

I'm a little high, but I read this and just nodded my head like it was fact

howwlll

I rewatched it due to a later comment and was like WAIT this guy didn't even do nothing!

howwlll

Personally, I wish I didn't know this (I spoiled myself). Since it lets you know how things turned out. I'd rather be in suspense and thinking that anyone could die

von

My problem was that I figured out who was supposed to be who, and I know the history like u. So I kinda just fucked myself up wit my big brain 😂.

howwlll

THANK YOU. I was wracking my brain trying to remember why I knew the captain

dobley

Unfortunately I'm Jap so I was spoiled in a history class at school long ago😂 Even though I was'n t good student, these histories are way too well known

lyssa

It’s obvious that the show is going to paint the religious people as bad or evil hence what I said it’s a common trope.

Corey Leach

Dawg the names, titles, and connections confused tf out me the first time i watched this episode.

ok

One day we will get both Vikings and Succession ... i hope

Alex

"Almost" oh shit, did yall do a reaction to Apocalypto?

Alex

So a Rutter is a book pilots would keep all their notes in, and use to navigate around the sea back then. They didn't have good maps and charts, so a lot of it was, sail in this direction for this distance (measured by time and the speed you thought you were going) if you see this watch or for this stuff, winds go on this direction this time of year, that sort of stuff. He has 2 rutters, one is his own which he wants back as otherwise he has no way of finding their way back to home, the other is the portuguese rutter they got a hold of which let them sail through magellan's pass and make it to Japan. At that time, rutters were matters of state secrets, so he could be in deep shit with the portuguese for having one of theirs. Also, the captain-general, while nominally in charge of the expedition, at that time was not the leader of the shop, the pilot commanded the ship at sea.

Alex

There's good reason too, Henry viii was only a few years ago, and the queen after him was a catholic that was very unpopular and hard on protestants. Everyone was killing each other and it was one of the most violent periods in european history.

Alex

Not really, it's a historical fact that they hated each other. Henry the viii wasnt too far before this, and then Bloody Mary who brought back catholicism and inquisitions to england, followed by her protestant half sister throwing all that out. It also doesn't paint the Japanese in any special light, they literally killed a man for not bowing, and sentenced a baby to death for his father speaking out of turn. History was rough, all around.

Alex

In the hole it was Dutch, and to any japanese or catholics its portguese. It's an American production and for simplicities sake they've just relegated all european speak to english.

Alex

Not to mention both countries (spain and portugal) at this moment had the same King. They didn't like each other, they tolerated each other.

William Zavala

Holy crap thats Barney Thompson

Jamaal Ellison

Imagine your significant other coming home to kill your newborn child because they lost their temper over something someone said about their boss.

aj

dammmn these mf don't play, that's cold.

aj

I remember learning about those religious wars in high school. Specifically how protestants and catholics would both drown antibabtists (who didn't believe in baptisim at infancy). It's very interesting to me how much they HATED each other despite all being christian.

nakin

bruh i thought that was Tom Hardy

Johnedel Rubinas

this man said ramen ingredient im dead

Trevor Wingard

Yeah the conflict between the Catholic Christian Nations and the Protestant Christian Nations at this time was intense. No separation of church and state at this time; religious and political conflict were very intertwined.

B

It’s not about painting religion in a bad light. It’s about accurately depicting how religion was seen throughout history. And the tension between the different religions. Blackthorne is English. And in those times, the church of England was a Protestant church. Catholicism was also illegal in Britian in those times. That’s why we see Blackthorne so against the Catholics. He isn’t a non-religious person saying religions are bad. He’s a religious person saying that people not following his religion are bad. Which is accurate for those times.

The Uprising

so are we pretending religion didn't play a massive part in conflicts and political aggression in history again? all things that are quite common knowledge hell there's hundreds of history books written on the subject

Nononanon

At least learn about Japanese history and history in general before making stupid comments getting triggered about your religion not being portrayed as amazing sauce.

lyssa

You sound more triggered than me over pointing something out 😭

artisticSarcasm

"subarashi" was crazy i lost it🤣🤣🤣

TheDroppedFry

Listen I can understand having that initial reflex when a show reflects the historical underbelly of religious and political society in feudal times, but trust me when I say that you can separate the distinction between a disgusting satanic show like "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina", and when you're watching a historically-accurate rendition of 16th century Japan that shows that while there is good faith and religious people (like Mariko, the regular Japanese commoners, and sometimes John Blackthorne), the organized religious society is inherently going to have powermongers like any other institution. And naturally, those who use the word of God for their own greed and schemes will be the first to die and enter Hell.

Brobi-Wan Kenobi

"What are they?" "White people" 😂

Dylan Taylor

Roshi and me shared the same brain cell when he said Blackthorne looked like Viggo Mortensen lmaooo. I had to do a double take!

Norman kay10

THIS IS LIT AM JUST STARTING

rickie woodson

came for sanada, stayed for asano. did not know the shark skin man himself was in this show

stanley drury anderson jr

Exactly that’s the only dumb thing to me especially with somebody who is an actually speaker speaking more Japanese than Portuguese

Hotep Tiger

They’ve already watched, so it’s not a reaction, more like a rewatch

Leo

The acting was out of this world I originally came for hiroyuki sanada and the guy who plays blackthorne who I remember from upgrade but lady Mariko stole the episode for me her scene with fuji was A1 and yes it's very obvious that's Bae. I also believe yabushige must listen to drake because he a F.A.N. for sure bro even grabbed his tea and adjusted his seat 😭.
