Idle hands are the devil's playground.  I don't know what that means but what I can tell you is this: I needed a chain sprocket so I made one.

Let's Make Our Own Chain Sprocket!

Very few things say 'I love you' like a custom chain sprocket.

Was just watching Adam and then this comes along :) Sorry, Adam, you'll have to wait! Also, I was kind of hoping for this to be the first Maho-CNC-project, but I guess that's still on the horizon?

This vid is great! Loved the bit about how to lay out the sprocket in CAD.

Oh sure. You showed the BEFORE and AFTER of the chain RUNNING, but no before and after with it STOPPED!! Are you tryin' to pull the wool over our eyes??? Im totally disgusted!! It probably makes clicking noises like your lathe. You ARE gonna fix that, right??

Just superb. Fantastic visualization of the chain/sprocket inter-relationship. Have you ever considered a ‘How’s it’s made’ episode? I’m almost as keen to see how you create the illustrations & effects etc as the actual design & machining. Almost! ;)

Glad you liked it PF. I'm always undecided on whether to add that stuff or not. I can only image some people's eyes glaze over!

Its projects like this that light the fire under my butt to get that Maho sorted! It would have cut this in one single pass. And probably installed it on the bike, too.

Thanks Casey! If you mean how I make my own videos, yes I have. Its on my list and I'm sure one of these days ... you get the idea. Surprisingly I get a lot of requests for how to do that sort of thing!

Hi Tony, thanks for the video! I'd never even thought of making my own sprockets. On a side note, I hope you don't mind an unrelated question. Would you accept a 0.02mm wobble tolerance on the horizontal plane of a lathe? if I put my hand on my lathe spindle/plate and push horizontally, there's 0.02mm on the dial indicator that runs out. if I push down vertically, the indicator doesn't move at all. Just trying to decide if I should strip the machine and swap out the tapered roller bearings.. Thanks!

This might be my favourite visualization of the chain / sprocket relationship since Neal Stephenson's use of it to explain the Enigma machine in Cryptonomicon. Great work as always, Tony. :)

It all depends on what accuracy you are chasing. A better way to measure would be to cut a test bar and mic the 2 ends and measure the difference. Note that this will also measure twist and wear of your lathe bed etc so could take you down a rabbit warren!
