Hey folks, I have fallen behind on subscriber requests as well as new releases, so sorry about that. This is That Time of Year, when the flood of writing assignments comes in: TIFF capsules for Cinema Scope, catalogue entries for the Viennale, and a smattering of TIFF / NYFF / Venice reviews for In Review Online. Plus, classed begin Monday at UH, so I have been prepping like a madman. Five classes, three of which are online, which means a lot of uploading and downloading and PDFing, etc.

In light of this, I may not make it out to Soi Cheang's Mad Fate, which closes tomorrow and is playing in a far-flung suburban theater (Stafford, Texas, if that means anything to you). But this weekend I do have every intention of getting out to another far-flung suburb (halfway to Galveston) to see Passages and, stamina permitting, Oppenheimer in 70mm.

I will say for now, however, that last night I started watching Woman in the Dunes. Only got ten minutes in before I had to feed cats, unclog a toilet, and contact a bunch of filmmakers about payment for an upcoming screening. But those ten minutes were about as thrilling as anything I've seen in ages. So yeah, I'm excited. Hope to finish it (or actually, start over) tonight.

Finally, a confession: I have never listened to Chinese Democracy

Is PASSAGES only playing in the suburbs of Houston? That seems odd. As far as I can tell, AMC theaters gave MAD FATE a cursory one-week release nationwide.

I guess it was playing in town for one week, with no fanfare. Tomorrow it moves to a megaplex on the far southside of town, halfway to Galveston. It's the same place that has OPPENHEIMER on 70mm. But five hours of film, plus an hour-plus driving, is a tricky proposition.
