One of the arcs most companions have are how being with the Doctor teaches them to have the bravery and determination to take action against injustice. Mickey and Donna being good examples. My impression is that racism is expressed differently (often but not always more subtly?) in the UK than US …but as a white middle aged dude I’m probably not well placed to judge if it’s better or worse. Interesting point you make about allies.
