from your description, most of the people who don't like season 8 probably only watched a few episodes and just watched it through a 'i want michael back' lens. this was the same for me, but after i rewatched i appreciated how good it still was

I think all of the seasons are good. Some are just not as good as others- but this season overall is pretty good in my mind. I agree with the poster above, most people view it through a “no Michael” lens. And don’t get me wrong I miss him in the show, but I’ve grown to appreciate the show after him as well.

Catherine Tate (Nellie) was on Doctor Who for a little bit. Loved her characters on both!

It was hard when Michael left, especially for those of us who had been rewatching the office for years as the seasons were on tv. So a lot of fans had an automatic bias against season 8, and then Robert California rubbed some people up the wrong way and so did Nellie. Personally I love them both, and think season 8 is awesome... but I didn’t feel that way when it was on originally on TV. People just need to give it a chance.

re: dwight's own show, there is an episode in season 9 that was a backdoor pilot for such a show. didn't work out
