Drama tier replacements: Spy Classroom is starting in 20 days - https://anilist.co/anime/146323/Spy-Kyoushitsu Endo and Kobayashi Live! The Latest on Tsundere Villianess Lieselotte is starting in 21 - https://anilist.co/anime/143064/Tsundere-Akuyaku-Reijou-Liselotte-to-Jikkyou-no-Endoukun-to-Kaisetsu-no-Kobayashisan| The second one is a comedy where two friends playing an Otome game find out they can communicate with a character in the game, who mistakes them for gods. The manga is fantastic.

There are two different types of fan service I've observed in this anime. The first type of fan service is there solely to be sexually arousing to those so inclined and for no other reason. The second type is still there to be titillating/arousing make no mistake but is also serving another role. In this anime that role is usually comedic but in some other anime sexual content could have a dramatic purpose. What I noticed with this episode is that the presence of the first type of fan service feels intrusive and for me undercuts the second type. A good example of the second type is in one scene where the camera is focused on Beta's bosom and she pulls a notepad and pen out from it which is a mildly funny gag. There is a reason to focus the camera on her bosom. Even more so because we cut to the Archbishop's reaction and the camera has shown the audience what the Archbishop is looking at. The hot-spring scene at the start of the episode was a mixture of the first and second types of fan service and for me a prime example of how the first type undercuts the second. The scene was mildly funny but everytime the camera zoomed in on Alexia's breasts or panned up her body it felt distracting. If Cid had been checking her out then the camera could have been following his gaze but no-one was looking at her. Whenever her whole body or torso was in the picture as long as her face could be seen I was fine with it but whenever there was a shot that zoomed in on a body part for no apparent reason it felt intrusive. To me it felt like it was taking away from what the scene was about. Isn't it enough to see an attractive naked woman? Does the camera really need to tell the audience where to look? There is actually a fair bit of mildly comedic fan service in this series that I feel is constantly being undercut by the other type.

Glad I wasn't the only one who audibly went "What the fuck?" after seeing this episode haha.
