Cid does not think this is a game at all, he made up stuff but what he means by 'playing along with him', is he thinks they think he's not being serious about his goals of being this superhero like character, Eminence of Shadow. Because he has no idea his ad-libbing was actually true stuff, he thought he was a crazy person people are following to humor his ridiculousness/chuunibyo behavior. Like Overlord, he's keeping up the act like kids roleplaying on and outside of playground. What is most important is Cid's goal of being his ideal 'superhero'. It's not about heroism that he seeks but the power to be infallible and rid of evil. Things like being 'nice' to people is not noble or 'good' in the objective sense. As I always say. There's a difference between being 'nice/kind' and being 'good/righteous'. People today always give blind love and blind kindness even to strangers or bad people without realizing it. In fact being kind often hurts people because it cheats people of life's suffering and their mistakes to grow and develop as a person, much like parents allowing their kids to make mistakes or get (lightly) hurt instead of being sheltered. As long as Cid continues to pursue his goals and ideal self, he will continue to be a model superhero and inspiration for the girls, he is very much essential to their lives and identity because he doesn't choose sides or determine what is good or evil. They seek the truth and nothing but the truth, they seek power and justice without mercy. If they choose to let people go it is based on their whim.
