Can't even believe you're up this late.

Christopher Rivera

HxH relies on anticlimaxes. That’s part of what makes it unique, clever, and hard to predict.

Oda Nobunaga

*dog barks* ''I'm comingggg I'm comeeeeenn'' I love it omg

Killua X

My favorite part of this reaction so far: AP: I'll be honest... (was expecting some big revelation of her thoughts on something HXH-related here) "I don't really like that dog." 😂 Try using your hand to block/bop his nose whenever tries to jump on you--I have some experience in dog training.

I had the same experience with Greed Island, which is the most hated/underrated arc by most accounts (so you may be disappointed). York New, which you just finished is generally agreed to be one of the top 2 HxH arcs. It has a lot of dry exposition or infodumps and a much lesser villain than Chrollo. But Chrollo is one of the best villains in anime, so a lesser villain is not at all a bad villain. It takes some reflection on Chrollo to understand what makes him so special, but for starters, just consider how he and Kurapika were dealing with identity crises. Kurapika split between the values of friendship and revenge, the living and the dead, only deciding on prioritizing his friends at the end after having already harmed his self-image, distancing himself from them, and putting them in danger -- being uncharacteristically careless. Chrollo lacking a sense of individuality and wanting recognition he compensates for it with the collective identity of the Troupe and by collecting nen abilities (a manifestation of one's personality). Greed Island is a lighter arc than York New and will be less serious, less deep, still darker than previous light* arcs (Hunter Exam, Heaven's Arena), but it will also have some of the series' highlights in terms of action. I can't say why it's better upon reflection but a lot of HxH is easier to appreciate once it's over: "you don't know what you have until it's gone."

I’ll often see tweets like the following about HxH (removed spoilers): Quote/ Not enjoying something as much as everyone around you can be a frustrating feeling. This was what I felt with the [removed] when I first watched it. However, upon giving it another try I found myself loving this arc so much more. Truly an unbelieveble and emotional journey. There's many things I could talk about when it comes to this arc but the big stand out has to be [removed]. Even before my 2nd experience with the series I considered him a great character, but now he ranks among my very favorite antagonists of all time. /quote HxH is very unconventional so getting attached to expectations may harm a person’s experience with it, hence why rewatches usually raise one’s opinions of it, their expectations are gone, they take it for what it is.

JD

That reference to Ging's friend. A lot of people highly recommend watching the first episode of the original HxH anime, or reading the first chapter of the manga, because you're supposed to know about that friend from the start, and not knowing about him takes away from events later on. After finishing the series and rewatching it a dozen times I strongly agree with them. I think everyone should watch the first episode, or read the first chapter, before watching the 2011 anime. If I had done that, I would have appreciated and understood later arcs a lot better, instead of being confused/annoyed.

JD

In this upcoming arc there's lots of points where there'll be readable text on the screen. I recommend pausing to read them, cos they're kinda fascinating.

Christopher Rivera

Yeah, I quoted it previously to help, idk if she read it. But I also recommend watching 99's first episode or the manga's first chapter (not hard to find, and very short).

JD

How can you conjure chains without knowing what they look, sound, smell, taste, feel like in intensely intimate detail? That's conjurer training for you, you've got to be able to imagine them into reality using your own aura.

Killua X

Shouldn't of watched this before trying to go to bed because now I'm hyped. Can't believe we're in Greed Island already 😬, feels like I just started watching your HXH reactions yesterday. I'm half-asleep so I'm sure I'm gonna edit/comment more later (as usual), but I really like where your mind is right now with basically everything you said. As others have mentioned, the anime alternates between lighter and darker arcs and this is a breath of fresh air from the York New City arc (or the Kurapika arc as I like to call it). I get why Christopher doesn't think you're gonna like this arc so much, but I know you like more adventure-type stuff so I'm gonna say you will like this arc because it really is something different, a new world essentially, and yes, we will see the boys grow as characters and in their abilities. I won't say when or how,.. but I'm very interested to hear what you will be saying about Gon and Killua's abilities when they fully master them, especially given your opinion on them right now as being kind of basic and boring. What they chose to hone for their Hatsu makes sense inside the HXH world and fits each of their characters. Gon isn't that smart as we all know lol, but he does have amazing potential/power that leaks out every now and then based on his resolve--so it makes sense that his ability will be a way to harness his raw power. Killua was tortured by electricity so he's able to harness it without harming his own body, almost like Force Lightning 😄 (thanks for the Star Wars reference btw). Don't worry, I think you'll be...satisfied with what comes of these powers. I really like how you're taking a liking to Gon and realizing how special he is. I think you're really going to like him in this arc. Gon is actually my favorite HXH character btw, I just think Killua's name is cooler, which is why my PFP is Gon but name is Killua 😅. Don't stress about the multi-tap thing. It's not really relevant at this point. Idk if they screwed up the numbers or if I missed it too but basically it just allows more players into the game on a single console. Also, that intro is kinda spoily lol. I mean, only in the sense that it shows most of the main characters that we'll be seeing in this entire arc (which most anime intros do?) so don't read too much into it I guess. Seeing it again after so long definitely reminded me of all the stuff to look forward to tho. Can't wait 😁.

To clear up some confusions: Firstly, we did see Illumi. he was impersonating Hisoka at the troupe's hideout, so that Hisoka could sneak away. You can see how Hisoka's "copy" at the hideout is twitching (like Illumi does when he's disguising himself) and Hisokas "copy" tells us that it can only change it's appereance for 4-5 hours without needles; both things indicate that it's Illumi impersonating him. However, I think this is easily missed, so don’t worry about it. Secondly, the two constraints Kurapika put on Chrollo were that he couldn’t use his Nen anymore and couldn’t speak to/ contact any members of the troupe or he’ll die (just wanted to say it again, though I think you mostly figured that out by the end of the episode), so Kurapika was talking about Chrollo, when he said: “Now, you will get to experience the pain of loosing your home”. To be honest: If we hadn’t found out there will probably be people able to get rid of this Nen for Chrollo, I would have thought this to be a really interesting punishment for him and a cool way to deprive the spider of its head without having to kill him. So I’m actually somewhat disappointed this probably won’t be permanent….but I guess you can’t get everything xD P.S. This is my first time watching this too, so if I misunderstood something about this, feel free to correct my here 😊

The only thing that feels realy strange/ not in character to me about this episodes is that Hisoka isn't totally pissed at Kurapika and wants to kill him, after he deprived him of his excellent prey by binding Chrollos Nen. Idk, am I the only one that thinks that's strange? xD

Christopher Rivera

Killing him would likely make his judgement chain less likely or even impossible to remove as residual nen strengthens after death if imbued with a strong conviction like revenge.

Christopher Rivera

I’ll just say nen exorcists are rare. It’s neither very useful in most circumstances nor easy to develop. They are probably rarer than specialists (I believe it’s a type of specialist) and is a balanced ability like most, not just waving a magic wand without conditions/costs.

I think you will enjoy Greed Island more, It's my second favourite arc and there is way more character development. Yorknew City is a bit overrated imo.

Anonymous

Also the next two arcs have more fights, and one of them is one of the best if not the best fight in anime history.

Christopher Rivera

I remember mentioning in the 4th phase of the exam, that Gon wants Hisoka’s tag despite his odds because of his strong resolve (he’s no quitter) and how resolve would be important to a hunter’s potential later on. Now we’re seeing that with resolve boosting aura output and growth potential. It’s also Netero thought Gon had greater potential, because he was committed to becoming a hunter whereas Killua was just there out of boredom. Maybe I think she won’t like it, maybe I’m not sure, maybe I’m managing expectations :P I think she’d enjoy Yu Yu Hakusho: it’s action packed, famous for its tournament arc, and many prefer the main four because they’re together most of the time, and it’s less anticlimactic.

JD

Some people don't like this arc, but to my mind there's only one debatably drawn out part, and it also has some of my favourite episodes in the entire show. Like I can watch them a hundred times and still get goosebumps. The MUSIC in this arc. Oh my god.

Knocking Master Jiro

Yeah Episode 1 of Hunter x Hunter 1999 is very important to watch

Jeremy

Your dislike for the troupe and the Yorknew City arc as a whole makes me really sad. Maybe it's not even you disliking the arc, but to consider it boring hurts my soul. Especially considering that it's so well paced.. ///////SLIGHT SPOILER, DISCUSSING MINOR DETAILS ABOUT A FUTURE ARC///// If AP found YN to be boring at a point, I have an awful feeling about the CA arc now. It's hands down my favorite arc, but as we know the setup is fairly slow. She doesn't seem to care much for heavy exposition, especially when it doesn't involve main protagonists. I'm sure regardless of how she reacts to everything, she'll eventually look back on everything with a different kind of appreciation. As crazy as this might sound, my first time seeing the [REDACTED] v [REDACTED] fight I was actually fairly underwhelmed. It now stands as one of my all time favorite fights, but my initial reaction came from me not taking the time to enjoy the ride and truly appreciate the characters.

Christopher Rivera

Everyone has different ways of looking at things. She might dislike parts of HxH but she probably loves some other shows you enjoy. There are many other youtubers who love HxH anyway, can always check those out if it makes you feel better.

Jeremy

I very well understand that, just simply expressing how I feel about it. I support her bc I enjoy and appreciate her outlook regardless of whether I agree with it or not.

yo kel!

Man, if you feel like this arc is dragging... i’m not hopeful for the future 😅
