I think what you said about Gon is spot on with how he doesn’t value himself as much as those around him explaining why he puts himself at risk with little to no hesitation. Remember in episode 1 he said: “being a hunter must be amazing if it’s worth leaving your kid behind.” Paraphrasing but I believe that was the gist of it. I think Gon has feelings of inadequacy from his father’s absence, maybe more so when learning from others how great his father is.
