well, I don't think someone who didn't have to deal with that really knows how those abandonment-issues work, so it's not really a question of logic; e.g. Historia in AoT clinged to her long-lost father as well at first & went along with his plans right up to the edge and only backed down then, even though he was a total scumbag

Subscribed for HxH. Also, would recommend Monster and Berserk (1997) — both should be strike-free, SOS Bros and Chemical Lemons (alt. channel: JinjoVitis) have done them without strikes, and both shows are entirely available on youtube for free (great dubs too).
