Great reaction! As to why Light didn't kill Sayu: Yeah, of course Light's feelings played a part in it, but I ultimately didn't get the vibe, that it was the deciding factor for him. As he says in the episode (when he decides not to kill her) only Light's and Near's groups know of Sayu's kidnapping, so everyone would asume Kira has to be one of them or at least has to have intel on one or both of the groups. So killing her wouldn't have made too much sense for him, since it would have made him a suspect again. Additionally: Near tells us at the end that he believs Mello would have gotten the Notebook wheter or not Light's father had cooperated, since he was obviously to well prepared not to have a plan B for that case. And even though Light never says this himself, I think we are to assume that he'd have considered that as well.

Yeah killing her in that moment would have accomplished exactly nothing. They would have just taken the notebook from Light's dad by force

To your question: Yes you can just kill another death note user with a death note. There is no protection preventing that

The people Mello killed from N's team were fairly public or known figures. The name and face of the FBI director is easy to get. The two who are leftover were unknown enough. Near himself has his real name hidden as he is from the same orphanage as L. So Mello doesn't know Near's name Near *does* have Mello's photo however.

First of all: you're not dumb! Death Note is a pretty complex show to begin with, and now there are even more players in the game (even if Near and Mello aren't as smart as L); you're just not smart enough to understand it better than the whole anime-community around here who don't have OCD-issues distracting them. Also some people here have already seen the show before, so the deck is pretty much stacked against you ^^' Considering that loosing your Death Note for good is kind of a death sentence for Shinigami (since they can't prolong their life by writing human names in it anymore), it's a reeeaaaaal dick-move to just snatch the Death Note of someone else just to drop in in front of humans for shits & giggles.

guess since "Wammy's House" is an orphanage and they only know each other by the names they got AFTER getting there (guess "Near" and "Mello" weren't their birth names), there never was a need to reveal their past names...and if every child from Wammy's is raised to be a detective of sorts, having their personal files under lock and key (or erased) would be a good safety measure, even if just to prevent one who fails & gets caught by criminals leading to the whole orphanage being burned to the ground But to me it raises an interesting question: what name do you need to kill someone with the Death Note exactly? The name they got from their parents? The name they are officially registered with somewhere? A name the person identifies itself with? If it's the first, a "lost child", e.g. swapped by birth or something, would be virtually impossible to kill without the Shinigami eyes since noone would know, including themselves.

You might be able to count not seeing another deathnote users lifespan with the eyes somewhat of protection. but yes you are correct.
