The Empire could defeat the whole world if it used modern tactics. Imagine a modern US fighting the rest of the world stuck in the 19th century. The Empire can kill so many US soldiers, that the American public would not want to intervene in Europe with their military ever again. Tanya can destroy other countries' will to fight. Destroy them psychologically. Use propaganda, kill hardliners with secret police. She doesn't have to commit genocide. She would know all the mistakes made in her original world like invading Russia right before winter or attacking Pearl Harbor and avoid them. I really hope you react to the movie sequel. The battles are a lot better and there's no innocent people dying in droves, which you dislike.

the entire problem for the Empire is that the escaped army of the Republic still keeps fighting, even if they don't have anything to gain & their lives to loose, so they only continue out of emotions...Tanya wants to not only win against the country, but also against any remaining forces, so noone is left who could team up & become a threat again. Honestly, I can't think of a way for the empire to come out on top...either they loose the war (as far as I understood didn't even start it initially) & loose, or they win...which makes the other countries freak out & join, so they still loose. Gandhi was pretty on point when he said "there's enough for everyone's need but not everyone's greed"...everyone wants peace...until they find out they could have more money/land/whatever in the long run if they first take more from the enemy and THEN make peace... On the Mary Sue (or male: Marty Stue) topic: Generally a character who doesn't need anyone else for anything & could theoretically do everything by himself & makes even specialists on a field of knowledge in his show obsolete, because he somehow is even better at what they do...like if a character was a super-fit martial artist...and also somehow knows all the stuff about engineering...oh, and he's also a skilled talker/leader...and a naturally-gifted magician/psychic who outperforms people with years or even decades of experience on top of it all. Bonus points if he/she somehow knows all of this stuff without any explanation for it in the plot, like growing up in some backwater where he could barely have gained any of that knowledge he somehow magically has for...reasons...

The movie is so-so with one great fight scene but it sets up season 2/3. My algorithm for you says you won't like it so I vote wait till the next season is done.
