He throw the spear to see what happens, if the spear returns it must be meliodas, because I think only one other member could it throw it back but only on special conditions which weren’t given when he throw the spear. And if it didn’t came back but was stopped before destroying the village he would know it was one of them, if not he would know it wasn’t one of them. Yeah and in the beginning they were more of the pervy scenes from Meliodas, later on the show they aren’t that much when I remember correctly.

Meliodas is always a little bit pervy, thats just his Character. And Gilthunder's spear can't chase Meliodas, if you remember Gildthunder ask the soldier for the coordination of the Town, and the Soldier said "From this fort, it is four o'clock to the southeast, 7,3 miles away." So based on these information he threw the Spear. And like Multimikstar said, if the spear returns he knows its Meliodas, if not, he knows that its not him but someone else. There are a lot of questions you have that get answered later in Season 1 and some later in Season 2, but speaking about it would spoiler a lot of stuff. So personally i dont even mention anything about it, because it could also foreshadow stuff.

I'd say from the way that the village "defied" Gilthunder, by pulling out the sword that he had put there as a "punishment" (It is unjust, but from Gilthunder's POV) - Gilthunder probably threw it with enough force to be simply trying to destroy the village. Like, the dude imbued it with magic and threw it over 7 miles... Probably has the power of a modern airstrike/artillery strike. The fact that it came back to him he knows only someone whose at holy knight level could do that - and that Meliodas' is the most likely candidate to be able to do that, and also have the motivation to...
