I know it's hard to hear Subaru reject Rem like that after this episode, but it makes sense tbh. Episode 1-17 all of Subaru's goals have revolved around Emilia and it is soooooo clear how crazy he is about her. And Rem knew that. SHe knew she would get rejected from the beginning because, as Crusch said in an earlier episode, it's pretty obvious who Subaru loves. Rem knew that she would get rejected, but she had to help Subaru out of his despair anyway. And if you're Subaru and you feel this strongly about Emilia, one speech (though amazing) can't change how you feel that easily. It's a great moment of self-sacrifice from Rem but Subaru also came out immediately with his feelings to let Rem know that he doesn't feel the same way about her, which I think he at least deserves some respect for. Btw Emilia is still best girl.

AwakeProductions

But I feel like Subaru’s feelings for Emilia are surface level in compare to how much he has been through or how much times he’s spent with rem. And rem has been more loyal and understanding towards him. But I guess you can’t help who you love, right? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Finally love this episode. Subaru he thought he was low of the lowest But that does not mean that he is worthless.

Subaru choosing emilia here makes sense as when he first came to the world the one who saved him was emilia. Not to mention Emilia got mad at Subaru for a legitimate reason he broke her trust multiple times she wants to trust Subaru but Subaru constantly casted that trust aside. So I think it's a bit unfair to say rem is more loyal. Not to mention when rem died Emilia still decided to belive in Subaru even tho he was kinda suspicious. While everyone believed he was a spy it was Emilia who belived and knew he was a good person even telling rem that he was. Even when he broke down in the mansion the lap pillow xD. So while I do love rem and these episodes always hit me i still love Emilia a bit more xD! (PS the not killing and torture is nice to lol)

Mithroll

Well Emilia also never brutally tortured and killed him for smelling suspicious :^) But I think it's totally realistic for him to love Emilia the way he does. He loved her really quickly before he even met Rem, and you're right that he can't just choose to stop feeling the way he does about Emilia. PS. Something somebody once said to me which I think is very interesting, is that neither Subaru nor Rem love their crushes in a very healthy way. Rem sees Subaru as an infallible hero who is perfect in every way, and a big part of that is the fact that the only sides of him she has seen are the sides where finds the correct solution to escape a death loop. So to Rem he just looks like this invincible perfect genius who is good at everything and that everyone loves, and she is incapable of seeing any of his flaws. How could she, when she has never seen him fail? When Subaru started talking about how he hates himself, he reveals that he does have a very distorted and unhealthy self-image. But I think there are legitimate character flaws in there that he points to. This is a big part of why I like your videos - a lot of people don't like Subaru. At all. This episode and episode 13 are the biggest reasons why. But you continue to like him and recognize a lot of his good qualities which he himself can't see. Anyway, Subaru also does to Emilia what Rem does to him. He comes to this (what he assumes is a video game-like) world and instantly a beautiful girl helps him when it could cost her dearly and makes a lot of assumptions from there about how she should respond to the things he says, and how others should treat her, and expects her to perfectly understand everything he feels and goes through, and when she doesn't, he blows up (episode 13). So I think Subaru and Rem have very unhealthy views of the person they love. If Rem had a more objective view of SUbaru I don't think she would have been as "loyal and understanding" as she has been lol.

Mithroll

Totally agree with you on the loyalty bit. Subaru constantly abused Emilia's trust and went against her wishes because he was head-over-heels for her and got extremely overbearing and aggressively into her, then saying he broke his promises for her benefit. I don't blame her for being really upset at him. She clearly still likes him as a person which you can see in I think episode 17 when he comes back to the mansion and she cares about him, but she is upset for good reason and needs space from him.

People are forgetting... rem May have killed Subaru twice, but she sacrificed her life for him 3 times and she’s done so much for him. Emilia hasn’t done anything for Subaru at all except yell at him and scold him. The only thing Emilia did for Subaru was help fight Elsa but even that was for her own sake of getting the insignia back

For Rem's fans there is spin off novel, where in this scene Rem actually accept the proposal of Subaru. They run away and live together and even have children.

Imagine having someone who believes everything you have to say and will do anything you ask without questioning you or asking for evidence, that's rem <3. Also as you stated in the video, i won't spoil but sure... season 2 will be focusing more on emilia's character development but even after reading all that I still think rem is best girl and you will eventually see why lol. Season 2 probably won't be released tho until sometime next year. Season 2 will be the easily be contending for the anime of the year once its released as long as they make sure they don't cut alot of the most important moments out in the anime adaptation - it's going to be THAT good!

Didn’t ram kill him the second time because that was her wind magic when rem was torturing him for answers? So technically she killed him once, but I’m sure she might have ended up doing it anyway. Also that is true Emilia did only save him in the beginning because she wanted to know if he knew who took her insignia. So it’s kinda like Subaru fell in love with Emilia because of what she did for herself not really for his sake, and rem slowly fell for him kinda after Emilia said he’s harmless basically and for the good that he was able to make right.

Yeah season 2 will be great,if they dont fuck it up.In this case i will be pretty sad,as Re zero became my favorite series, because of arc 4-What will be adapted in season 2.I mean i will be more sad for the fan base, because they could get the incomplete version.

In the light novel, after this, Subaru and Rem discuss other types of relationships, including three-person relationships. So it could be Subaru, Emilia, and Rem all together. Not sure why they cut it from the anime. That sounds like the perfect arrangement for these three. Gluttony is taking more than you need. it's wastefulness.

I've waiting for this episode so much, just love your reactions!

The stuido did a great job adapting season 1 minus some things that were cut out or slightly altered ik sure season 2 will be faithful!

Season 2 is going to be both amazing and hurtful (I wonder how they will handle censorship) but s2 should easily be anime of the year!

Great reaction! It actually kinda opened my eyes to that point of view that everyone’s words could have put Subaru into that state of mind. I do however feel you may be viewing Subaru through rose colored glasses as well. He is a very flawed human being, he’s Prideful as he’s demonstrated before with his fight with Julius and the knights. Even his being at the selection at all was due to Subaru being to prideful to actually listen to Emilia and stay out like he was asked. And as an anime only I believe it’s been implied that Subaru was a shut in when he was in Japan. Someone who dropped out of high school doesn’t attempt to find a job and stays at home all day watching anime, reading Manga and playing video games. Essentially mooching off of his parents for money with no intention to pay them back. Which is a really big Taboo in Japanese culture. So when he says he’s “never done anything” it does have some element of truth to it. Even in this world where he tries to start a new life he himself hasn’t really done anything besides save Rem and the Kids. He has always gotten others to help him. Reinhard saved everyone from Elsa, Rosewall killed all the Mabeasts. So from everyone in that worlds perspective he talks a big game but hasn’t ever done anything to back it up.

I think what makes Re:zero great and this episode in particular is that it really highlights Subaru as a real person with real deep flaws and how his experiences finally forced him to confront his flaws like his pride and slothfulness from his life in japan. I also think it was in someway designed to make the viewer think about their own flaws and possibly help other real life shut -ins in Japan to make the most of their lives instead of wasting them coup’d up inside doing nothing to better themselves or the world.

AwakeProductions

I understand that Subaru isn’t some perfect 2D character. I don’t like characters who are just perfect human beings who never get angry or jealous or get frustrated or embarrassed or anything. That’s just not realistic to me. I like the fact that he shows real emotion and conveys it so well. It comes across so naturally. He is probably the most realistic character in anime I’ve seen so far. So just because someone does not go out and try to be SUPER GREAT AND FOLLOW ALL OF SOCIETIES EXPECTATIONS, It makes him someone to frown at? Not to me it doesn’t. I don’t think he goes around saying he can do everything because he’s the best. I never read him saying that. He just tried to do everything. So I wouldn’t say he never tried or tried to do more because that’s all he does or tries to do. He emerged to the meeting with Emilia to try and stand up for her or protect her because he’s seen her die. I think it’s admirable that he wanted to that. Then he said he was a knight, not understanding how serious it was cuz again he’s not from here, and he ended up offending them and they tell him he’s not worthy or her or to be called a knight. How would you feel if someone said that to you in front of someone you love and were only trying to protect? He got embarrassed and lashed out in a defensive manner, which I understand wasn’t the best thing to do, But’s it’s an honest normal human reaction. He wants to be seen as more, as someone powerful and someone to be respected because he probably has never felt that way in his life and thought he could get that here. Obviously not. And I don’t expect everyone to do exactly as he says, and he doesn’t go around demanding people to do things. He tries to persuade them. Like with crusch. All he has done during this show is try to help people. He tried to save Emilia but he doesn’t have combat or magic training so he tried to do what he could. Yeah Reinhard has to save the day but I don’t frown upon Subaru for not being able to do as much as him because it wouldn’t be fair to. And all the times he’s died and come back and tried to save peoples lives and ends up just dying horrible again or having to watch them die because he doesn’t have the training yet to actually make a difference in a fight makes me empathize with him extremely. He wants nothing more than to make a difference in others’ lives but he just isn’t “strong enough or smart enough”. I hate these people for tearing down his confidence throughout this show. It makes me sick. How someone could get a person to hate themselves and they don’t even realize or care. It’s disgusting.

One of the things I really love about Re:Zero is the psychological aspect that the show portrays so well and the massive amount of character development Subaru has been going through! He's probably my favourite anime character, due to how "human" he is. A 25-minute episode of two people talking? Sign me up!

This episode was an absolute masterpiece, including what he said to Rem in the end with that one line. I'm personally not as upset now, and I wasn't when it actually happened, but especially wasn't upset after I read the cut content from the anime that was supposed to be in the next 3 episodes or so from the source material. Fantastic episode all around, and I'm happy you enjoyed it as much as I did. I could go on and on about this episode and the character decisions and dialogue within it and all of your thoughts on it and surrounding it, but we don't need to see a college paper in the comments section, lol.
