What is Than's plan here? Did she want Alexis to grow just because she gets off on that sort of thing? Or is it because she wants, for some reason, to have some real competition at the the t shirt contest?

Than said quite explicitly on page 73 of the LBSM that she was ordered to “encourage” Alexis' growth “the best they could”. First attempt (with patches presented by Ysabel) failed—Miriam have used them instead. Second attempt almost failed since That was “a bit heavy-handed”, but Alexis saved it. Now Than only need to win that contest (or at least should make sure Alexis will not win it) and everything will be just peachy. Just why she's so sure that she'll win anyway is a big mystery, though.

I love this, beautiful drawing and fascinating story. Q: has there ever been any discussion of how Than got that enormous herself? She did say that she was about as big as she could get and still be supported at that site, implying she could increase herself if she wanted to, but no indication of how she initiates growth. Just curious. thanks

There were speculations by readers, but nothing in the comic itself. And note that the exact words were “You are I both are about at the limit to what can be supported here” which was followed by “Look on the bright side: you'll probably live comfortably and be free to grow and grow to your heart content” which kind of implies that limitations are related to that particular place (size of building? elevator capacities? who knows…) and not to the method of growth used to achieve that size…
