Since you all voted that you do enjoy seeing my work early, here is my latest painting: Alice!

This is cool, I feel more like an artist now that I have exclusive viewers lol. To make it even more special, the reference and previous version will not be shared at all on my other socials :)

This was a painting that I started Mid-Last. year and it looked like the last slide you can see. I decided to come back to it as part of this series where I am studying color through portraits (like my last painting) and also reworking the style I somehow decided looked good last year...idk what came over me. I was studying alot of Samdoesart's style (still am) but for some reason my drawing skills suffered for it.

I think at the end of the day... it was because I was not used to putting so much emphasis on the painting/coloring process. That probably took my brain away from focusing on aesthetics, or simply showed that I need more practice when I think of appeal through color/shapes instead of lines. Moving forward, I plan to be more confident in my drawing/value/shading approach and figure out colors later - Similar to how Eliza Ivanova does many of her digital pieces. I think that it was good to do these studies and challenge myself with color and minimal drawing, but its best to just go back to whats ME, and feels comfortable. That results in the best artwork.

The final art files and narrated slow time-lapse video are coming later at the end of the month!

Love your stuff Josh. A friend and I used your drawing and reference for our own analysis last night; curious how you decided to change the angle of her face and how you decide how much larger to make the facial features in comparison to the model (i.e. what proportion do you decide to increase the eye size). Thanks for posting!

Hey Chris! It definitely wasn't super intentional, but I went in with the intent to make something my own, using the reference somewhat loosely. Its hard to explain the proportion decisions because they are something I really just have a feel for after spending a couple years copying other artists and seeing what I enjoy. You can see in the timelapse that I actually change alot of what I initially went with since it seemed a little "too disney" and exaggerated for me. So to simplify, I first draw the head, and then the shapes for the eyes. then that helps me decide everything else. You don't really go about this by taking each feature one by one and trying to decide how to cartoonize it based on the reference - you'll end up with something that feels awkward that way.
