HEN-TIE

OVERVIEW

A hero-turned-killer from a faraway land, Hen-Tie’s been loyal to the Panty Mafia since the day she met Kern, and her sniper skills are second to none.

BIOGRAPHY

Hen-Tie was born in a land far different from Panty’s Landing and far, far away. It was a sprawling city, sure, but was stuck in the past. Think fairy tales with dragons and knights with swords and big stone castles with ten foot doors. Her father was an important man—he was the king of this land. And her mother? His mistress. A member of the royal guard who he had been having an affair with. Once Hen-Tie was born, he simply cast her out in the streets to be forgotten about, hoping the problem would solve itself.

It didn’t.

The father of the king’s mistress was a man who had spent damn near his entire life in the royal guard, and at times, in the most important of battles, served by the king’s side. When learning of the fate that had befell his granddaughter, he abandoned post, took her in, and fled to the neighboring mountains, raising her but never letting her mistake herself as his own—he made it clear where she had come from so that she understood the dangers her life could face if anyone discovered the truth.

And it was because of these very dangers that he trained her to battle. Everything from martial arts to sword-fighting to gun battling. By the age of ten she was a certifiable badass. By twenty she was a killing machine who wanted to test the mettle of that title by assassinating her father—but her grandfather refused to allow it. He told her that, despite his problems, the king was a good man and without him the nation would crumble. Their enemies would consider them easy pickings and loot every town in sight.

He did put her powers to use, though. He convinced her to work as a protector of the land. To shield her identity and focus solely on helping those in need. She stole food from the rich and gifted it to the poor. She scared off gangs who took advantage of the desperate. She fought, and fought damn hard, against anyone she viewed as evil. And when her grandfather finally passed on, losing his life to a heart-disease, she left the city for good, deciding to take her fight elsewhere.

She bounced around from town to town, taking down minor gangs and gifting their spoils to those in need. She drove off rabid animals, she drove off rabid people—she made a name for herself as someone who defended justice, a regular old superhero.

That all changed when she reached Panty’s Landing.

She’d known of the place, of course, because who didn’t, and only ended up there because she was hunting down a gang who’d robbed multiple businesses blind. Their hideout, a small building just on the outskirts of Panty’s Landing, was more packed than she imagined, and though she launched a full-on assault that left mostly everyone dead, the few who survived got the upper hand on her and beat her close to death.

Thankfully, luck was on her side that day, and the Panty Mafia had been targeting that gang for months and had just made their move. As a man held a gun to her head, about to kill her, Kern swooped in and slashed him down. She watched, in awe, as he defeated everyone remaining. By himself. Then patched her up. By himself.

This led to the passionate night that is referenced many times in the Panty Bear. As he healed her wounds, he confided his deepest secrets in her, not expecting her to survive the night. He told her about Daring Derek, and about the girl he lost, and before things came to a close, they made love. To Kern, this was just sex. But to Hen-Tie, it was the start of something magical.

That is until she woke up and found he had fled from her bedside, leaving nothing but a note saying that he would cover the room service fee if she wanted breakfast. This infuriated Hen-Tie, who rung a massive bill up, but did nothing to stall her love for Kern. She tracked down the Panty Mafia and threw away all of her morals, joining it and working her way up the ranks until, finally, she was trusted enough to be sent alongside missions with Kern.

The entire time he ignored her, keeping his distance and not sparing a positive word. They were partners in work not love and he made that wholly clear to her, not caring how it hurt her heart. She didn’t care, either. She knew he had bee through trauma, and she knew that he had been hurt as well. As his eye in the sky, his life was constantly in her hands, and for her, that was enough.

But, eventually, enough was enough. Her frustration at his lack of approval boiled over, and in an attempt to win him back, she got with Bon, hoping it would make him jealous. When it didn’t work, she grew sadder than ever before. She had thrown away everything for this bear, including her grandfather’s teachings, and he didn’t spare her a word. She hated him. She loved him. She hated him. She loved him.

Or, she wished that was what she could say.

Because truthfully? Truthfully she just loved him too much.

Too much to stop until they were together.

TRIVIA

-Hen-Tie loves chicken sandwiches and doesn't understand why everyone finds that so gross.

-Nobody in the Panty Mafia except Kern knows that she isn't a stuffed animal.

PRODUCTION TRIVIA

-Hen-Tie went through more revisions than any other character in The Panty Bear. She was easily the hardest to figure out, considering the multiple plot-lines we were juggling with her. I would say we entirely re-did her character a good three or four times, tweaking her personality, her role in the story, etc.

-Hen-Tie betraying Kern and Lucia was one of the earliest ideas of the entire book, before we even had her figured out as a character. We had the idea of Lucia and Kern being shot in the heads with darts and sorta built a lot of her story from there.
