Let me screen shot my notes app: off-white > yeezy in the fashion lane any day. As one of the most famous musicians alive when he dropped Yeezy’s, Ye gave V a platform at best. Yeezy said of Vitgil: “I have all these ideas and Virgil is able to architect them because he is an actual architect.”🤦 sounds like literally every other creative endeavor Kanye is involved in—Virgil was Ye’s ghostwriter, to put it crudely. So when Yeezy’s come out in 2008 — Virgil had begun to establishe himself in fashion as a trained architect with a controversial, unmistakable style. He was making controversial, beautiful, multimedia high art that would change clothing forever. He was not mentored by Yeezy, who came to the fashion world as a household name. When he wore the prototype to the 2007 Grammy’s, he’d already had most Grammy noms w/ late registration. West became the first solo artist to have his first three studio albums be nominated for Album of the Year by the shoe drop. He had the best creatives on earth making a shoe for him. He’s an ideas guy, but he’s unable to execute—without Virgil there wouldn’t be a yeezy, literally. Kanye couldn’t have made it without him. Just like Ye could also probably become among the best known painters, writers, or whatever. He’s beyond super famous. The shoe is good but the promotions to1 billion people is what makes him a fashion icon…which again requires an unseen crew of dozens of extremely talented people who don’t have Ye’s mouthpiece. Ye and Virgil collaborated the way you collaborate with your niece on her homework by doing it at all while she throws guesses out about what a declarative sentence is. Ye gets the A. He did not mentor Virgil. He gave Virgil a once in a lifetime chance to translate Ye’s vision into a physical item. That construction requires real, quantifiable skill. Ye didn’t make anything, he had a dream of making a shoe and the most talented people on earth made it a reality for him. Virgil came to the industry as an academic no-name who knew the craft inside and out. He managed to make one of the most unique brands/houses/imprints that will ever exist in less than 5 years’ time.Ye came to that fashion table as the most successful & popular rapper/artist alive. V came with a degree in architecture and an aesthetic and ability to execute. Imagine if you had a team of people on virgil’s level who agreed to execute your idea of a shoe. Without any experience, you’d have a shoe any fashion house would fight over. Virgil came as a newcomer who grinded to beautiful success in one of the most cut-throat industries on earth. He was not an international superstar in 2008. RIP king. And man all these articles referring to him as “Friend of Kanye, Virgil…dead.” Bummer all around my stomach hurts
