Manchuria, September 19th, 1931, General Tatekawa found out something was afoot in Manchuria! Insubordinate members of the Kwantung Army were looking to start a war with China. However, when he got there he told the leaders his message from Tokyo could wait as Tatekawa thought war in China might not be so bad. 

So Tatekawa reserved a room in a hotel,  enjoyed the Gesha dancing, the sake running, and quietly ignored the chaos happening in the streets.

A longer one for this one but hopefuly not too long...out of interest does anyone remember what series is next in the EH schedule? 1909 In the Federal State of Austria-Hungary, an Austrian Engineer Named Franz Bauer Invents the First ever Communications Network between Computers. He goes through Several Name Proposals, Including “Information Mesh” and “Information Mine” before Finally Settling on “World Wide Web.” It Initially only Works in the Austro-Hungarian Capital of Vienna. 1917 26th January In the Kingdom of Great Britain, the Sea Defences of the Village of Hallsands in Devon are Breached by a Combination of Strong Easterly Gales and Exceptionally high Tides, Shaking the Houses to their very Foundations and leaving all but One Uninhabitable. The Villagers, Fearing the worst, had Scrambled up the Cliffs at a low Tide and are unhurt, but the Village is Completely Ruined. Many Families Relocate to North Hallsands, or Beesands, having lost most of their Belongings. The Villagers’ Fight for Compensation will take about Seven Years. 1923 2nd September In the Japanese Republic, Kanagawa Police Chief Nishizawa Katsuo Reports that he gave his District Chiefs a “Certain Mission to Deal with the Emergency Situation,” the Details of which he Refused to Describe. Towards the End of his Life, Nishizawa will Tell an Interviewer: “someone must have said that ‘Korean Malcontents’ were Dangerous at such a Time of Confusion.” According to Multiple Japanese Witnesses, during the Night, Police in Kanagawa, Yokohama, and Tokyo begin Informing Residents that it is Permitable to Kill Koreans. Some Orders are Conditional, such as Killing Koreans who Resist Arrest, while others are more Direct: “Kill any Koreans who Enter your Neighbourhood,” or “Kill any Koreans you find.” Also during the same Night, as Police begin to Organise Vigilante Bands to Kill Koreans, One Police Officer Tells a Newspaper Journalist that Koreans had been Caught with a List of Neighbourhoods to Burn and Carrying Gasoline and Poison for Wells. In the Town of Yokosuka, Police Tell Residents that Korean Men are Raping Japanese Women, Inciting Japanese Men to Form Vigilante Lynch Mobs. In Bunkyō, the Police Falsely Report that Koreans have Poisoned the Water and Food Supply. Nishizawa’s Final Report on the Massacre will Acknowledge in a Secret Appendix that these Rumours are all False. 1924 3rd March In the Arab and Islamic Kingdom of Hejaz, after the Majmi Caliphate is Abolished, Ahmed Sharif as- Senussi of Cyrenaica is Selected as the new Caliph of Islam by Abdulmejid II. King Hussein bin Ali of Hejaz Rejects his Claim to the Caliphacy and Declares himself Caliph. He Initially Fails to Gain Support from either the Egyptians or the Arabs. 8th June In the Tibetan Empire, Mountaineers George Mallory and Andrew “Sandy” Irvine are seen “going Strong for the top” of Mount Everest by Teammate Noel Odell at 12:50 P.M. Neither Man is ever seen Alive again. For Future Historians, it will be a Point of Debate whether Mallory or Irvine reached the Summit before they Died, and Irvine’s Body and Portable Camera will never be found. 1927 In the Japanese Republic, to help Pay for the Rebuilding of Tokyo, Prime Minister Suzuki Bunuji Offers Earthquake Bonds to the big Banks at a Massively Discounted Rate, the Idea being that they can Loan Money to help with the Rebuilding. When the Government Proposes to Redeem these Bonds, a Rumour starts to Spread that those Banks who hold the Bonds will go Bankrupt. In the Ensuing Bank Run, 37 Banks throughout Japan [Including the Bank of Taiwan] and the Second ~ Tier Zaibatsu Suzuki Shoten go under. To Save these Banks and try to Gain Control of the Situation, Suzuki Issues Emergency Loans and Declares a Three ~ Week Bank Holiday. 1933 30th May In the Tibetan Empire, Mountaineers Percy Wynne Harris and Lawrence Rickard Wager, British Members of the 1933 British Expedition to Mount Everest, find an Ice Axe at 8,460 Metres [27,760 Feet] lying on Rocky Slabs 60 Feet below the Northeast Ridge Bearing the Inscription Willisch of Täsch, an Equipment Maker from Zermatt. They leave it where they find it and Collect it during their Descent later in the Day. Since only Mallory and Irvine had Climbed that high along that Ridge, the Axe must have Belonged to One of them. The Leader of the 1933 Expedition, Hugh Ruttledge, will Speculate that this might be the Site of a fall, during which it either Accidentally Dropped, or its Owner put it down Possiby to Free both Hands to hold the Rope. The last Person to see Mallory and Irvine on their Ascent in 1924, Noel Odell, Offers a much more Benign Explanation: that the Axe had Merely been Placed there on the Ascent to be Collected on the Descent in View of the Fact that the Climb ahead is almost Entirely on Rock under the Prevailing Conditions. 1936 In the Kingdom of Great Britain, in a Speech before the House of Commons, Prime Minister Oswald Mosley Announces a Major Revision of the Nation’s Colonial Policy, “Recognising the Rights of all People for Self ~ Determination, the British Government has Resolved to set all Imperial Subjects on the Path to Independence, the Conclusion of which is Intended to Occur within the Foreseeable Future.” When Asked if this would Greatly Weaken Great Britain’s Position in the World, Mosley States that “all Nations that Desire to do so will be Welcome to Remain as a Member of a newly ~ Founded Community of Nations but even then as Fully Equal and Independent Parties.” Whether any Nations take up Mosley’s Offer or not Remains to be seen. 18th August In the Spanish Republic, the Final Orders, sent by General Emilio Mola in a Coded Telegram, Provide for the Army of Africa to Revolt at 5 A.M. and the Army on Mainland Spain 24 Hours later. The Difference in Timing is to Allow Spanish Morocco to be Secured before the Army of Africa Transported to the Andalusian Coast by the Navy. The Rebels could hardly have Failed to take Spanish Morocco. There is only a Handful of Republican Officers and the Foreign Legionnaires Obey the Order to Rise without Question. The Spanish Workers, who have no Arms and only Limited Contact with the Indigenous Population, are Completely Isolated. 1938 In the Russian SFSR, while in Prison, Sergei Korolev Writes many Appeals to the Authorities, Including Stalin himself. Following the fall of NKVD Head Nikolai Yezhov, the new Chief, Lavrentiy Beria, Decides to Retry Korolev on Reduced Charges of being a “Saboteur of Military Technology,” but, by this Time, Korolev is on his way from Prison to a Gulag in far Eastern Siberia, where he spends Several Months inside a Gold Mine in the Kolyma before Word reaches him of his Retrial. Upon reaching Moscow, his Sentence is Reduced to 8 Years to be Served in a Sharashka Penitentiary for Intellectuals and the Educated. These are Labour Camps where Scientists and Engineers Work on Projects Assigned by the Communist Party Leadership. Korolev is brought to the Central Design Bureau 29 of the NKVD, which Serves as Andrei Tupolev’s Engineering Facility, to Work alongside his old Mentor. 1942 8th January In the Kingdom of Great Britain, a Son, Stephen, is Born in Oxford to Frank Hawking and his Wife, Isobel Eileen Walker. Isobel had been Born into a Family of Scottish Doctors from Glasgow, while his Wealthy Paternal Great ~ Grandfather had Overstreched himself Buying Farm Land in Yorkshire and had gone Bankrupt during the Agricultural Depression of the Early 20th Century.
