Medusa - Monstrous Misconceptions - Extra Mythology

Thanks so much to our sponsor Ting! Use http://extracredits.ting.com/ to get a $25 credits with no contract to try out a new phone service and most importantly, you don't even have to change your phone number. Geoff has been using it personally and it's been going great for him. Not every monster in mythology starts as one. And Medusa has dozens of interpretations. Is her story a cautionary tale about getting caught up in fame? Or is it a romantic tragedy? Was Athena's decision to transform her a curse for defiling her temple, or a gift of freedom? Let's break it down and talk about the most famous of the gorgons, Medusa. ___________ Support the people who make this show, vote for future Extra History topics and get great perks at our Patreon! http://bit.ly/EHPatreon Subscribe & ! to our channel on YouTube at http://bit.ly/SubToEC Got more info about Extra Credits on our website at http://extracredits.site/ Grab your Extra Credits gear at the store! http://extracredits.store/ ___________ Thanks for participating in this week's discussion! There's also an interpretation of the curses as a prison - no matter how fair in body or spirit, none may see you lest they be turned to stone, none may touch you lest they be bitten by a poisonous serpent and die... which can, in turn, also be interpreted as ways to protect her from unwanted advances. Lots of ways to shift perspective with regards to these tales.

...describing the interaction between Medusa and Poseidon as consensual misses the mark. If you're aiming to show Medusa in a more positive light, if you care about using your platform to educate on consent, if you're going to talk about how Athena's transformation wasn't necessarily a curse (as Peter pointed out, it can be interpreted as protection from unwanted advances), or if you want to connect Medusa's story to how her face was historically used as a symbol of protection, you should call out that many (most?) versions of the story indicate that Poseidon raped her.

Eh, this one is kinda trying to merge the "three monster sisters" and "yet another girl Poseidon banged" with a dash of "rebrand rape to consensual tryst b/c a modern audience would object to that".

The version I'm familiar with has Medusa raped by Poseidon.

Happy to see you working with Ting. When I was looking to change phone companies, a few years ago, with my unlocked phone, I found Consumer Reports gave Ting it's highest rating, from customer satisfaction. This is largely because of their very open and simple billing. Ting has also gone out of their way to help me use less data, and told me about that $10/ month, unlimited talk and text, which has saved me a LOT of money, lately, now that I have a few people who want to talk with me, a lot. I love Ting, and think you're made for each other. =^.^=
