To support the Trevor Project visit our tiltify at https://tiltify.com/@extracredits/extra-pride-2020 & to see what we'll be broadcasting throughout the week, put your eyes on our schedule over at https://www.twitch.tv/extracredits/schedule Thanks to 300, everyone is familiar with the Spartan troops & Spartan military power. But let's talk about the 300 that served the Theban army. An elite force of shock troops, these 300 men were well trained, fearsome in battle, and were the first to defeat the Spartans while having a smaller force. This was the Sacred Band and they had one very important trick up their sleeve: the literal power of love. Yup. Every member of the Sacred Band fought alongside their partner. It's pride month, baby. I Assume this is the Sacred Band of Thebes wiped out by Alexander the Great during the Battle of Chaeronea?

I'm a little confused. When the Thebans first won against the Spartans, you said that it was the only time in history they had lost against a smaller force. But then when the Thebans went to war again with Spartans, the Spartans also lost to a smaller force. Did you mean the only time the Spartans lost a WAR against a smaller force? Or did you mean a battle?

I think, and you may have said this and I missed it, that the soldiers were lovers to form a closer bond, making them more compelled to save each other and not letting each other die. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexuality_in_ancient_Greece#In_the_military )

In 338 BCE, the combined forces of Athens and Thebes fought the Battle of Chaeronea against the Macedonians led by Philip II of Macedon, Alexander the Great’s father. It is said that King Philip was so impressed by the bravery of the Sacred Band of Thebes that he wept at the sight of their dead bodies.
