This new South Sea Company will have a monopoly on trade in the rich new lands of South America, but all the ports there are controlled by Spain, with whom Britain is at war. So Blunt pushes the country into a premature and unfavorable peace with Spain, enlisting famous authors to write his propaganda and convincing Queen Anne herself to tip the balance of Parliament in his favor. After the queen dies and the government changes hands, Blunt kicks Harley and his Tory leaders out of the company. He manages to bring King George I himself on board as a ceremonial leader, linking the success of the South Sea Company with the reputation of the monarchy. But while his maneuvering inflates the value of his company's stock, it's never produced anything close to the amount of money he's convinced people to invest in it. ___________ Get the intro music here! http://bit.ly/1EQA5N7 *Music by Demetori: http://bit.ly/1AaJG4H Listen to the outro music here! http://bit.ly/1ERCS9G __________ James Recommends - City Building Games Across the Ages Anno Series (Dawn of Discovery): http://bit.ly/18mJxPg Extra Credits - How High Costs Drive Players Away from F2P Games Free to Play is Currently Broken: http://bit.ly/1AobnQV

I sense many similarities between the monkey business of the South Sea Co. and today's corporations. I look forward to learn how this all ended.

Woah. I'm only more and more impressed by John Blunt and his evil financial genius.

Sharp mind and no scruples, indeed

Awesome episode, but the episode uses "Hollow Sword Co. Shares" instead of "South Sea Company Shares" on the little Share icon throughout. Mistake?

Does this video look choppy to anyone else or is it my computer? We should talk about the Hanoverian dynasty at some point on this show.

This sounds like it could easily have been written about 2008 than 1717. "Those who fail to learn from history are oooh DONUTS!!"

Yeah. I have a crappy laptop, but it's weird because the older videos don't cause problems. /shrug

I wish I knew how to fix that. :\ We haven't done anything different with this video compared to previous ones, so I hope it goes away. But keep me posted if it doesn't, I'd like to know if it's an ongoing problem.

Really enjoy your history segments and would love to see a later one on the Carnage Legacy I.E. The Homestead Strike and his charities. But what I'd most like to see next is an explanation of the video game industry's historical revenue streams and explain why I see so little in game advertising. I was waiting for a match in modern warfare the other day and wondered why reality based multiplayer games don't use Google like ad support to fund legacy or even current server use. How much would game-play be effected if KOLA was Coke/Pepsi and if the fake billboards were real consumer AdSense billboards. I mean with an actual usage based revenue stream incentivizing long term support couldn't lobby times get closer to the speeds of web searches.
