One thing that I feel is worth pointing out is that census records aren't objective truth either. A census is only as good as the diligence, methodology and incorruptibility of the census takers and all three have a tendency to get severely disrupted during periods of political turmoil. Historical censuses, especially ones meant to determine the tax base, have a tendency to fluctuate wildly even in the best of times and become completely erratic during times of war. Regions that are outside the political control of the census taking authority can't really be properly counted either, meaning that either ignoring them or guessing was required. Even when nobody was trying to cheat, displacement due to warfare could often mean that people didn't get counted anywhere. This is especially true of Chinese censuses that are heavily based on traditional communities and the concept of the hometown. If the census taker was vague, refugees could end up not counted, because they're from somewhere else and thus not part of the community, while they wouldn't be counted where they were from since they weren't there anymore. Further complicating matters in China is the fact that there were two Chinas, the Southern Song and the Jin, and both were somewhat of a shadow of the former glory of Northern Song. This would pose issues of borderlands where neither counted, a crisis of legitimacy for both governments and the Jin in particular had a fairly weak mandate and a shaky grasp of much of their territory. And the Mongols didn't even start invading Song territory for decades after the death of Genghis Khan, which means those tens of million would all have to be in Jin territory and those of various smaller states in the thinly populated west. This is not to say that the Mongols were nice or friendly or didn't kill anybody, they most certainly did. It's just that it seems somewhat unlikely that they killed 25% of the entire Chinese population in a few years during which they only invaded the more sparsely populated north, without a lot more devastation showing up in records for decades after. Also, the Red Turbans and Zhu Yuanzhang wouldn't form the Ming Dynasty for another 74 years after Kublai Khan's death and there were ten Yuan emperors in that period. So, yes, the Ming came after Kublai Khan's Yuan Dynasty, but quite a while later.

@Jonathan Luoto me too, I LOVE IV! The only games I haven't Played from that Series are I and III. @James VanderHaeghe not sure I'd agree with that but then again I binge-listened to the VI Theme Tune for Days after I First bought it.

my biggest problem with the series is the way it shies away from the brutality of Genghis Khan it's like doing a series about the Wehrmacht without mentioning the Holocaust
