I watched Iczer in raw Japanese (which I didn't speak) back in 1987, a few years before it was available in English, and liked it enough that I decided to run a tabletop RPG campaign based on what I understood from viewing it.

I really liked how the series blended creepy horror (with a teeny Cthulhu element), especially in the amazing early story like that school horror and the family home scenes. and then transitioning into the mecha, yuri, Japanese monster movie, and superhero elements -- and also how well Iczer's fight scenes were storyboarded (to the point where I could extrapolate her powers and abilities into a RPG). The character designs and music I think are really strong, most especially Icizr One herself, which I consider to be a classic design -- that hair, those ears, her attitude, her pose in the tree.... she remains one of my favorite character designs even decades later. It ain't perfect, but the show is just gloriously over the top, and I love it! If you haven't seen it, I recommend Hirano's Vampire Princess Miyu OAV, which followed this a few years later but had many of the same creative staff and some of the same creepy horror vibe of the early Iczir story in a more formal and restrained show -- that is, focused on a single genre -- (and with one of Kenji Kawai's best soundtracks).

It's also impressive how much this was Hirano's project: he handled screenplay, directing, character design, and storyboarding (though the original Iczer concept was from Rei Aren)... but I get the impression this was, for some reason, a project Hirano put his all into.
