Finally finished with the original arc, now on to wrap up the sci-fi portion.

first things first (SPOILERS for final episode maybe): the first half of it is a recap. don't know the exact timestamp but just mentioning in case you wanna skip it, since it really doesn't provide much discussion info. personally i wouldn't even watch it. i think i've been pretty forgiving of this show's weirdness, but i genuinely think the last episode not only didn't answer any questions, but also really ruined a decent amount of the show's core themes. (END SPOILERS) secondly, i really don't know how to feel about the Sawaki monster being used as Ai's ""warped"" internal perception. all of the monsters so far have been representative of or related to people who abuse their power, an incredibly crucial theme that's been present throughout the first 7 episodes, as well as episodes 9 and 11. the only exceptions are episode 6 and the one where Neiru saves the vain girl. but even then, the girl with the hallucinations had trauma related to people using their power over her, even if the monster itself wasn't directly related. the other girl's own vanity was also likely due to people around her imposing their views about women and beauty. up until this point there was no indication that the trauma these girls went through were false or that they had "warped" perceptions. so it really, REALLY doesn't sit right with me that Ai's doubts about Mr. Sawaki are portrayed as possibly being incorrect. in the real world, perhaps, but in the context of a show about the abuse of power, especially by adults, and about "don't pretend not to see," having the adolescent girl protagonist's worries be brushed off as "hey your suspicions and instincts about Sawaki are wrong actually, also trust your mom because she's a good person" is just..... hmmmm. even after this episode i think interpreting Sawaki as a "good" guy is highly dangerous; same with Ai's mom. if we had gotten a proper conversation between Ai and her mother about Ai's worries about Mr. Sawaki, i wouldn't be *as* skeeved out by this episode. but we only see Ai's mother being a good mom (which i'm sure she is), then Ai coming to the conclusion that she should trust her. again, most abusers are rarely the monstrous caricatures portrayed in media, some may even be good in certain regards but awful in others, and it is this veil of goodness and respectability that allows them to get away with so much and what makes their victims doubt themselves. and even an "objectively" good person like Ai's mom can still enable terrible people. i know that Sawaki hasn't harmed Ai directly, but it's VERY strange to have him framed as a sketchy character, then to throw it all away in the last episode (or at least make more ambiguous the nature of his character).

it's a shame, i really did enjoy how they handled Ai x2 and her "saving herself" but i feel like there must have been a better way that still fits with the core themes and messages of the show.

I think you got the right of it by the end, but just to confirm, Real Ai (our Ai) was the one who initially had her eye plucked by Kirara. She was shocked when she woke up because if you remember back in Ep. 1, it was stated that injuries sustained in the dream worlds wouldn't be fatal, unless they affected the eyes or heart. She should have died from the attack, but Alt Ai removed her own eye and gave it to Real Ai to save her. So in the end, they both protected each other, Alt Ai being inspired by Real Ai's sacrifice to return the favor.

As others have mentioned, the first half of the final episode is recap. The new material starts around 25:24 (the last shot of the recap is the shot from this episode of Ai in the fetal position saying "Thank you").

I think the losing an eye sequence is confusing (seemingly intentionally) due to shot timing. Kirara attacks twice. The first time, Ai (protagonist) blocks it, and is knocked out, but doesn't sustain any permanent injury. When we see Ai' (alternate universe) check on her, her eye appears to be intact. Then Ai' stands up to protect unconscious Ai. Kirara attacks a 2nd time, and Ai' takes the hit, losing her eye.

The long panning shot at the beginning was most probably due to the abismal production issued they had. Just my 2 cents on this
