This is probably one of my favorite episodes of WEP so far. Certainly the border between reality and fantasy is blurred, but the traumas of the Egg Girls have undoubtedly been very grounded in reality. Looking at Yae's trauma under the context of psychosis, schizophrenia, and forced instutionalization makes it a thousand times more heartbreaking (both on a personal level for me, and within the context of this week's episode's theme of how to treat problems you don't understand). Even MORE heartbreaking is the fact that schizophrenia and psychosis often occurs due to very severe trauma, yet these people's pain (both the hallucinations, and the abuse that is unfortunately very common in institutions and from family members) is often brushed aside as them just being crazy instead of an understandable reaction to being abused. Yet, despite Yae being a minor character, I have never seen any show (especially in anime) allow its psychotic character to be treated with such kindness and respect without villainizing her. A small gesture which seems silly to have impacted me so much, but still very appreciated. It parallels pretty nicely with Ai's struggle too, with people being unable see the problem with Mr. Sawaki and not trusting Ai's judgement. Made even worse by Ai's mother, the person she's supposed to be able to lean on for support and trust, making a decision that could potentially harm her daughter. Neiru's comment certainly doesn't help either, making Ai doubt herself and her reality even more. But I took Ai grabbing the prayer beads at the end as her concluding that to deal with these kinds of issues, she has to trust herself. Even if she turns out to be wrong about Mr. Sawaki or never gets any clear answers, she can at least acknowledge her pain as real and keep pressing forward.

also probably not what the writers intended like, at all, but my brain couldn't help but think "egg?? deleuze??"

I think Ai started to see the power of believing other people. Up to this point, she had a bad image of Sawaki-sensei, which is purely based on what she saw during the time Koito was alive. However, her mom believes that Sawaki is a good guy, worthy of giving him a romantic shot. So what Ai learned from Yae Yoshida's case is that she must believe other people, despite lack of evidence presented to her, to be able to connect to them and find the truth. This is why she decided to go back to school.

I really like this episode, but it also made me realize that my expectations were probably too high for the story. This episode confirmed that the writers were not interested in exploring complex themes, but were instead trying to tell a safer, more linear story. Nothing wrong with that, btw.

Ok, but still, to be so positive against him in the last scene is still a little confusing for me. We did not see her come to the conclusion that he is not responsible for the death, so it's a little sudden for me.
