My problem with the dub, any dub really, is that it changes the content. Pretty good example is that joke where Yusuke has the delay and says his house is on fire. It's funny and adds to his character. But that is the problem! In the original version, he knows his house is on fire and he just yells at his mom for allowing it to happen. There is no joke. When you are watching a dub, you are watching a different version of what it was intended. Can you enjoy it more? sure. But in my opinion it is better to consume it the way it was intended by the original creator, not by a secondary source. The dub for this show, IMO, feels like it was made for little kids, or at least a much younger audience than it was originally intended.

I cannot confirm if this is true or not but i heard that in the manga this first arc was quite a bit longer but a lot ended up being cut from the anime to speed up getting to the identity/core of the show. I am personally a little curious if the manga did explore the dynamic of Yusuke losing hope before getting his second chance at revival. Its also possible that like you said the Mangaka was just new and still figuring this stuff out at the time. Who knows but i thought it was an interesting thought process as to what was really cut from anime.
