It always seemed to me like Wilhelm's wife hated fighting and did it out of duty. Then Wilhelm's angst turned to love and he beat her to take the painful duty from her and score a waifu. It works for me, I dunno.

The thing about Willhelm and Theresia, well, they removed some parts from the light novel for unknown reasons, making him look like Andrew Tate. Basically Theresia always hated fighting, it wasn't very well explained in the anime. But yeah, she suddenly found herself to be the Sword Saint and well, that's why you always see her staring at flowers instead of fighting. Then she came to know Willhelm was getting folded in that village so she picked up the sword. And yeah Willhelm knew all this so that's why he then challenged her to take the sword from her, basically.

The Willhelm thing sadly hinges on a kind of badly translated line. "With a face like that you shouldn't be wielding a sword" is referring to how miserable she looks while holding a sword. She hates being a fighter but she is the best in the world so she feels obligated to act as the sword saint. Willhelm proving that he's stronger than her frees her of that obligation and lets her retire while he takes her place. Also the "it's humiliating" probably has less to do with her being a woman and more to do with her watching him train while hiding who she really was. As a fun extra, when the witch appears behind Subaru you can totally read her lips and see what she's saying to him.

Your explanation is how I always understood Willhelm's reactions and actions toward his wife. I was actually a little surprised at Teeaboo's take on the whole thing, but I suppose looking back on the translation I can see how it can be easily misunderstood so I don't blame him there.

Can't blame you for not getting the message in regards to the Wilhelm and Theresia stuff because of the way things are framed sometimes, but I think If you hold on to the convo he had with Subaru before the whale shows up, it becomes clear that Theresia had no desire to be the sword saint and Wilhelm wanted to take up that duty for her
