So joey the way they survive was that Rei saved them. When the legion walked up to Shin's juggernaut on ep 11 that was actually Rei that uploaded himself to a nearby legion in the area. Rei carried them around towards safety but then walked into the Giad Federacy territory so that's why it looked like A legion was holding the main 5 as hostage which was shot down showing a broken legion tank in the facility. In the light novel they explained it clearly but for the anime they used it as a metaphor. That's why they showed Rei letting go of shin around the beginning and shin running after him but just kept getting far away b4 shin woke up
