"Shoyo doesn't have a tragic backstory". Joey, our boy has lived and breathed volleyball since middle school but he never got to play it. His middle school didn't have a male volleyball team so he wasn't allowed to play, he had to ask some old moms to give him a few tosses just so he could get to spike . They have showed many flashbacks how he hasn't had anyone to practice with, how he kept running up to other ppl asking if they could just give him a few tosses and they declining him. And then at the end of middle school a friend of shoyo felt so bad for him, the friend gathered some people and agreed to sign up for the volleyball team just so shoyo could get to play, only for them to get completely crushed in the first match which eliminated them from the tournament. That was shoyos first and last ever match he got to play real volleyball. That's where all the "Shoyo has never had a real team before" came from at the start of the show

Joey, I remember being confused too about the whole blocking bit you mentioned. So as far as I understand, if your team touches the ball while blocking your opponent's attack and it doesn't go to the other team's side, you are still at risk because the ball is still in play on your side, and you need to hit the ball back even if the ball ricocheted off your fingers out of bounds on your side. the little giant was mentioned ricocheting balls off opponent fingers on purpose since it's hard to predict the ricochet path when it's hit strategically off your fingers. a way a short wing spiker can play.
