It really is a cool and clever switch up to have Misa and especially Light lose their memories of the death note. And to see Light again (for a longer period of time) of how he was before the death note. It’s scary how quickly people can almost flip a switch or justify certain things when given ‘power’ and how it can corrupt so easily.

So, when L was younger he used to invest in the stock market and because he's so smart he made a ton of money. He got bored of it though since it wasn't challenging enough so he started doing detective work instead. He still has a lot of money so that's how he was able to afford that building. There are a lot of little hints about how rich he is which is kind of funny.
