According to Wikipedia, the phrase 'coming out' originally meant 'coming out to society' and in the early 20th century, gay people adapted it to mean 'coming out to gay society/subculture', and from there it became applied to opening up about one's sexual orientation/gender identity/secret etc to society in general. I seem to recall that being forced into 'coming out' in the oldest sense was one of Rose's chief resentments in Titanic. Also, this is the second of your reactions this week where a character has quoted 'nobody puts baby in a corner'. Jared Padalecki playing someone being spoken to in both cases.
