Something I really like about this episode is we have two scenes where one of the characters stands up to someone who has hurt them tremendously. But we also see both Ben and David have these issues. Ben saying about how his parents would never accept his sexuality, and then the moment with Nick and David's Dad not knowing where David lives. But the writers do not let this be an excuse. Ben tries to use it as an excuse, but the writing and Bash's acting make it so clear that it does NOT change anything. His problems with his parents are not Charlie's problem. Like, yes it sucks that his parents wouldn't accept him, NO kid should have to live with that fear. But that doesn't mean he gets to assault Charlie, or treat him like shit. And same with David, it SUCKS that his Dad clearly doesn't know anything about him or care to, but that doesn't mean he gets to treat Nick like shit and be a homophobic piece of shit or try to out his brother. And I really appreciate the way they did that. Because it is true that a lot of the time bullies have their own shit going on, usually at home, but you can't be going around taking that out on other people. And I really like that they had that scene with David and Tori after that moment. They didn't let us forget what a dick he is. He had a moment with his Dad not caring, and it IS sad because no one deserves a parent like that, but almost instantly we see him talking shit about Nick and Charlie again on the phone and he's still a problem despite us knowing he's got his own issues. And also, we get kinda parallels or whatever with these characters too. In the sense that we have Ben who knows his parents would never accept him and uses that as an excuse to be a piece of shit, but then we have Darcy who's Mum is awful and would also not accept her if she knew she was a lesbian, but she doesn't use it as an excuse to hurt others, she's still a wonderful person who loves her friends. And then with David, his Dad clearly doesn't care about him at all and it seems that's kinda his "excuse" to be a dick, but he's Nick's Dad too and he's clearly in the same boat with that and he doesn't use that as an excuse to be a dick, he's a great person who cares about people. I just really like that this show just didn't go down that road. There are shows I like that from, I enjoy the character developments and all that. But it is just such a relief. They're basically saying that you don't have to feel guilty for not forgiving the people who hurt you just because they have a sob story...
